who's better? Judas Priest for me.

It's a tough call. I believe Iron Maiden to be more technically and musically proficient but Halford is a better vocalist. I would give JP the edge since they basically created new wave british heavy metal.

No disrespect to Judas Priest...they were at the forefront of British Steel.

But, Iron Maiden took Judas Priest's building blocks and just amped things way up to a new level. Steve Harris' bass playing alone revolutionized how the instrument is played, mixed and represented in the genre.

Halford is an epic frontman, no question the dude can wail...Dickinson is better. The man's nickname is the Saxon Siren.

Finally, just look at the songwriting, lyrics and overall musical composition. Priest really didn't evolve much and their jihadist fans are fine with that. When you take in the scope of Maiden's work, there's just epic storytelling there..."Rime of the Ancient Mariner", the concept album "7th Son of a 7th Son", "Alexander the Great", "Hallowed Be Thy Name", "Charlotte the Harlot", "22 Acacia Avenue"...you are entertained on many levels by their music.

With Priest you get 3 chords and the truth...for all 17 albums. Not much variety.

King.Lerxst has it right. Being fans of both, Priest was a pioneering force, but I give it to Maiden running away. Dickinson has the soaring vocals to fly over the galloping bass lines and their songs can be so varied. Priest for all of their dual guitar attack awesomness, couldn't pull of Rime of the Ancient Mariner or anything like that. Not that that's anything to be ashamed of.

After listening to both I think Halford has more vocal range than Dickinson.

I understand that people confuse the two bands but they do sound completely different. The galloping rhythm's of IM is pretty distinctive along with their unusual time signatures.

But if you want twin guitar down tuned harmonies, JP is the cure.

Green Manalishi...it's a great song but, I gotta' take points off for the fact that they didn't write it.

Livin' After Midnight and Turbo Lover are cliche Priest songs, honestly. Their best work is:

Breaking the Law
Love Bites
Some Heads Are Gonna' Roll
The Sentinel
Electric Eye

I think it's hard to pick the best work of JP since I pretty much like most of it (with the exception of most of Turbo Lover). Some earlier classics:

Tyrant
Victim of Changes
Stained Class

If you haven't heard Stryper or Enuf Znuf then you havent heard real metal.

Priest

Up the Irons all day. Priest was okay but very repetitive and never able to offer any sort of range. Most songs on their albums that weren't total hits could be considered filler songs. Priest's musicians pale in comparison to Maiden.

Maiden went through it all. They have a wide range of songs that they've published, Dicksinson really stepped up to the plate to realize the full potential of Iron Maiden. Galloping riffs, phenomenal bass lines, intense drumming, Maiden offered it all, and most important of all, Dickinson screams and growls really put them on the map.

Dat nigga kno more about rock music then Mr. Eesh know a out firearms.

The best live metal record (that's right RECORD) of all time is Unleashed in the East. British Steel is Priest's best record, and they peaked around this time.

By the time Screaming for Vengeance came out, Maiden was quickly becoming the leader of the genre with Killers and The Number of the Beast. Then came Piece of Mind and Maiden moved ahead.


I remember seeing Maiden open for Priest in the early 80's when both were at their peak.

One of the best shows ever,,,

footnote; Metallica's first three records changed EVERYTHING. American metal took over and that was it for the Brits.

Metallica, and even Megadeth really did steal the American show...

Early 90's bands like Pantera really stepped in to fulfill the heaviest metal band...

Yet, throughout all that time, Iron Maiden came out with record after record of ever transforming metal. They were never afraid to experiment, for better or for worse.

Judas Priest sucks, even amongst actual fans you will only ever hear of their mainstream hits.

I don't think Priest had the true staying power that Maiden had.

Again, I think Unleashed in the East is a top 10 all time metal album. And the fact it is live is amazing as most live metal recordings are not good.

At first it was all British metal and some Euros, Priest, Maiden, Saxon, MOTORHEAD, UFO, Status Quo etc

Then the Americans just bum rushed the scene Metallica, MEGADETH, Motley Crue, Guns and Roses,Pantera, Slayer, Great White, Ratt, Poison,on and on,,,

And I'm not saying all the above mentioned bands are good but,,,

Just like the revolution, the Brits won the early battles, the Americans won the war,,,

Priest is a little more varied musically. For instance, if you haven't heard a particular Maiden song before, you probably can tell it's Maiden. That isn't the case with Priest.
