They are bringing the Phaeton back over to the US. It's popular in Europe, but in the US people don't want to pay 7 series or A8 prices for a VW.

I knew someone with the W12 phaeton, it was a POS. You're paying Bentley prices to maintain a VW. It's not fast at all, that huge engine can't get out of its own way.
Phaeton is 5.9 seconds to 60
S63 Merc is 3.9 seconds to 60

If he buys the Audi he will get to enjoy many different cars. They have a wide variety of loaner cars he will be driving when that Audi is in the shop.
The W engines have never had long-term reliability. Just like the W8 that was used in the Passat, it has a high price tag but steep depreciation.
It's like the V12 that was used in the BMW 7-series, there is a computer for each set of six-cylinders, and a coordinator computer between the two of them. When one of these fail, the costs to fix them is usually greater than the current value of the car.

This.
If you buy a W12 make sure you buy an extended warranty that either covers you until you're done making payments OR when you intend to sell the vehicle...whichever comes last.
Of course, for the price of a W12 AND that extended warranty...you could get an awful lot of car that would NOT require such frequent and expensive maintenance and still give you a luxuriant ride and ownership experience.
