I carry because people like you think riding a bike is some instigation, some attack on drivers. Amazes me. Im sad its come to this but I will defend myself. My preferred weapon is a colt .45 but thats just too uncomfortable on the bike. My 9 is pretty effective within 10 feet - thats the defensive area I expect in a road confrontation.

Its a defensive measure - I would not 'pull' it on you in your car or even if you started approaching me. Id warn you then fire - 'brandishing' is illegal. I have tried and tried to find a rational argument for allowing a conveyance that can't maintain half the legal speed limit (my anecdotal pacing of the average cyclist shows that most of them are traveling well below 15mph, and even the 50-year-old, lycra-clad Armstrong wannabes can't break 20mph) to mingle with cars. It simply doesn't make sense, and I want it to, because it scares me that society has reached a point where it is now advocating for irrational public policy simply because a small, vocal, militant minority has managed to conflate it with "social justice." What's even more insane are the "take the center" laws, where cyclists are allowed to ride in the middle of the lane. It's simply irrational, and there isn't a solid argument to be made for it. Further more, as a cyclist myself, I find it astonishing that people who accuse motorists of being terrorists actually WANT to put themselves in a position so that those they accuse of being terrorists can harm them. I wouldn't trust a total stranger to hold my wallet for five minutes - why would I trust a total stranger with my life? That's why I stick to trails - there are lots of them in the area, and the only threat to me are stupid pedestrians and other cyclists (the closest I've ever come to being killed while on a bike was the result of another cyclist riding on the left side of the trail through a blind curve, forcing me to leave the trail at 20mph and flying within six inches of hitting a tree face-first. I was going to beat the living shit out of him, but he was so terrified of me and apologized so profusely that I let him go. If he had given me ONE word of sass, it would have been the end of his life.)

I have concluded that these militants are actually suffering from truly pathological white guilt (and I don't use that accusation as a pejorative - I sincerely think they are mentally ill), and that by framing the issue as a matter of "cyclist rights," they get to sooth their self-hate by claiming membership to an oppressed class. Now they can say, "I can relate to blacks who fought for civil rights, because I'm also an oppressed class fighting for equal rights - the right to ride my bike in the middle of the road, upholding traffic and unnecessarily risking my life." It's akin to that white woman who pretended to be black.

True to that. I had a friend who was a cyclist and he would go to work and move around town on a bicycle. I thought it was weird at first but then you kind of get used to it. He would train a lot and work on things like stamina and muscle mass. He always timed himself and always tried to improve his overall result. He even made a specific time trial training plan with one of his coaches, so that he could always keep track of what his overall results were like (time and distance wise). I know that some people find it strange but it worked for him and he never got stuck in traffic. Plus the guy was in great shape. So you know to each his own I would say

The streets/road are for cars. The sidewalk is for bikes/pedestrians. If you are using a mode of transportation that cannot keep pace with a car, you don't belong on the road.
