Now if you post an item of expense for say,,7 days, which is customary. On what day does the bidding really perk up? Someone told me don't expect bids to show till the end of the period.

It depends on what you are selling. Sometimes, you will get early bids from people who are trying to get a bargain. They will bid the opening bid and perhaps go up five more dollars, but, they know what they are willing to pay and if it goes beyond that, they just drop out.

If it's a popular or sought after item, you will get sniping wars in the last 10 min. or so. Usually 2,3, or 4 get into a sniping war.

In earlier times eBay had and enforced a rule that said once bidding for an item had started the lister could not pull the item. It was intended to prevent listers from trying to avoid reserve fees by simply pulling the item if the price wasn't high enough. In those days it was not unusual for there to be mini-bidding wars early in the auction as bidders would try to position themselves as being the top discount price going into the last 48 hours of the auction. Once they stopped enforcing that rule the advantages to bidding early if you were not the initial bidder dropped off.
