Lincoln spoke those words in 1858, a mere TWO years before he was elected President. The quote clearly shows Lincoln's racist and white supremacist views. Everything has an historical context, but there is no reason to give Lincoln, Washington, and Jefferson a free pass whilst applying current standards to anyone who supported the Southern cause in the 1860's.
