Oh lord, the two hikers that were killed years ago on the AT had a gun and it didn't help. Not much you can do with a gun if you can't reach it or you're approached suddenly.
Attacks on the AT are extremely extremely rare. You're safe on the AT then in a bad neighborhood. Most likely you'd end up shooting yourself or some other hiker by accident. A lot the lands don't allow guns because of drunken campers capping them off wrecklessly target shooting shit.
