Cracks in my Tires
Posted by: aging rubber ()
Date: February 06, 2019 08:21AM

I purchased a set of Michelin Defender tires 25 months ago (~35k mi on them) and at inspection the mechanic pointed out they are all developing fine cracks where the tread meets the sidewall. I brought them to Costco and the tech there said it was 'normal' aging. The cracks are not large and do not expose any of the belt or appear to be causing any lifting or separation of the tread.

I park the car in a shaded carport, keep them inflate to the proper pressure, rotate them ~ every 6k mi and I do not use any cleaning or shining products on them. Insight/suggestions?

The life expectancy of a tire is determined by the design. Tires are rated based on mileage. The cheaper the tire, the less expensive it is. What are the tires you have rated for?

I just got the reply

Regarding Cracking on 2.5 year old tire. I am a long time
Michelin tire owner and my mechanic noticed cracking on the sides of all my
tires where the tread meets the sidewall. I had the tire vendor (Costco)
inspect the tire and they say its normal aging - my mechanic disagrees and
says I should replace the tires (he does not sell tires). What are the
guidelines for replacing tires/warranty for 2-3 year old tires with cracks?
How should I follow up to insure my safety?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are sorry to hear you are having a cracking issue with your tires.

Tire cracking is commonly related to ozone / weather interaction with rubber. Weather
related cracking is not covered under the 6 Year Standard Manufacturer's Warranty.

However, safety is important to us, so to determine the severity of the cracking, we recommend taking your vehicle to an authorized Michelin tire dealer for an inspection (preferably at the retailer where the tires were purchased).

The dealer is trained to examine the tires and determine if any action is required. After inspecting the tires, the dealer will advise you if the condition requires the tires to be replaced. If so, the selling retailer or authorized tire dealer has full authority to extend the appropriate credit under the terms of the warranty.

If you or the dealer has any questions during the inspection process, please have them
call us at 866-866-6605 while you are still there.

Call your local state police barracks they will either send a trooper to look at the tires or they will ask you to come by so they can look at them. If they agree with the inspector go after Michelin if not take it to a different inspector.

Whatever you do don't drive on dangerous tires.

Op doesn’t mention how many miles he’s driven on the tires. Tires are rated by mileage. If the tires are rated for 30,000 miles, and you’ve driven 30,000 miles, they are done it’s pretty simple.

Tires are rated based on mileage. That is one rating

The cheaper the tire, the less expensive it is. Tautology

What are the tires you have rated for? UTQG rating is 820 A B

Defender truck tires or defender car tires? Does the shaded car port keep the sun off the tires or just the car? Are the cracks bigger or smaller than the width of human hair? 35,000 miles in 2 1/2 years indicates the vehicle is driven quite a bit, does it sit in full sun while you're at work 8 hours a day? Do you drive in full shade everywhere you go? Finally, what is the date code on the tire, how long did they sit in a warehouse before you bought them?

OP is a scam artist, the cracking tires he's trying to "return" aren't the ones purchased - the ones purchased are sitting on his friends car.

OP thinks USA tire companies have no idea how their tires perform: but they do.

OP didn't check to see if the tires were imported: if they are he can sue china and deserves the laughs he gets when he finds out suing a foreign company isn't even allowed.

Hey Mr Tire, I didn’t notice op’s 35k fact. Why is he even asking about this on ffu? 35k is a lot of miles for a Michelin. He should go get new tires.

May want to check how old the tires are. Just because the tires were new when purchased and installed 25 months ago does not mean they are less than three years old.

Some distributors are known for selling New Old Stock Tires. These are tires that while unused have sat around a warehouse for an extended period of time. There is a debate how long tires should be good for. I believe ten years from date of manufacture is the current standard, but some argue for five years, and I know some mechanics who won't install tires older than one to two years. There are sites on the Internet that will help you figure out the age of your tires.

that assumes OP is an honest customer and costco accepted a shipment of "bad" tires from a shop that couldn't sell tires at any price. why should we assume that? anyway that's indirectly printed on the tire. the mfg would call that out had OP realy talked to them: but the article is a total lie to start with - OP probably doesn't even have a car.

Do you ever take the whole 30 seconds it takes to google something or do you always prove how stupid you are?

Yeah right. Waste time googling something for a stupid site like ffu. That’s funny.

Do what I do,

Rent a low milage car/va/truck from avis. Put the rental on jack stands. Take your wheels and tires and your old ones to Juan at any used tire place in Woodbridge. Change the set over for $60. Add the $70 car rental (my truck has large premium tires on the Yukon). Best $130 you will spend. Havn't bought a set of $800 tires in decades.

Note: Make sure you use an airport with auto check in.

Does the shaded car port keep the sun off the tires or
> just the car? Its on the North side entire vehicle in shade all day

Are the cracks bigger or smaller than the width of human hair? bigger

35,000 miles in 2 1/2 years indicates the vehicle is driven quite a
bit 35k mi in 25 mo. is 16,800/year - less than the avg driven in USA (except those over 65 yrs of age)

does it sit in full sun while you're at work 8 hours a day? I work at home

Do you drive in full shade everywhere you go? no is that required to make tires last more than 25 months?

Finally, what is the date code on the tire 3916 - the tires were manufactured 60 days before I purchased them

how long did they sit in a warehouse before you bought them? no more than 60 days

So in summary tires 27 months from manufacture used 25 months, parked in the shade driven less than the US average mileage and less than half their treadwear rating. Cracking.

I have quite a bit of expiernce with Michelin LTX M&S tires. The only time they don't last for the expected tread life, 70,000 miles on the LTX, is in a work truck that carries a load every day or when the driver drives like an asshole. Or worse, a combination of the two. In 20 years and 40 trucks(work and personal), I have never seen one get dry rot. I've seen it plenty on other brands, but not the Michelins. The work fleet is in full sun 24/7/365.

I have 40,000 miles on my Michelin tires. They have a 70,000 mile warranty. They have plenty of tread left, but like the OP's, my tires are also full of dry rot and cracks.

I haven't had good luck with Michelin. Other brands have been fine.

OP here

The tread is fine on mine its the cracking Im concerned with. If you read the Michelin email they say this is normal and 'ozone cracking' isnt covered under warranty. I believe my mechanic overstated the urgent nature of the cracking. That said, 25 months is bullshit for cracking tires. The car I drive them on is very well cared for is never overloaded and my driving is normal and safety record outstanding.

Ive been a big fan of Michelin - Ive run them on my cars exclusively for almost 20 years now. Im mystified as to why these tires are cracking.

otherwise penniless fucker bought extremely expensive tires for his beat-to-shit truck. I swiped some methylene chloride solvent from work and sprayed it on his tires. Damn things fell apart after 500 miles. He got into a big argument with the fellas at the tire store, who told him to go fuck off.
