Sort of. But if an anonymous toll ever got caught they'd be gettin' a serious ass whooping from a trucker. Now they would just get a disdainful look from a hipster.

And my first album ever was the sound track to "Convoy" and it was awesome.

Back in the late 70s a lot of car manufacturers put CB radios in as optional factory equipment. For some reason the late 70s had CB radios as a major fad.

From the late 80's through about 1994, there was a CB group in NOVA called "The 32 Crew"...good people, good times.

My dad had a nice little CB in his car back in the 80s. It was a small unit, smaller than a car stereo, and it fit up under the dash neatly. He said he used it for listening to truckers talking about speed traps, and for emergencies since cellphones were not around yet.

Mostly I think it was just a cool gadget to play with on long trips through flyover country when listening to jesus radio and country stations wasn't cutting it.

Channel 37 is the Fairfax underground channel. Most of the activity is 7 to 9am weekdays.

I don't think CB really counts as the "first" Internet. It might be the first common "mesh" network. Obviously, continuous wave (CW) predates this but due to technical issues it never had significant adoption.

The earliest (large scale) electronic equivalent to the Internet might be the dial-up bulletin board.

It's actually doubtful that it was kind of the old school internet, however, as far as I'm concerned, every trucker used to have this thing in his cabin in case of any emergency situation. To be honest, I still use this cb base station antenna, but mine is portable. I use it when I travel across the country, you can't imagine how it saves time sometimes instead of searching for reception and it's the easiest way to connect with the friends who you're traveling with. I've purchased myself a new antenna recently, it was just after I had discovered https://www.palmgear.com/best-cb-base-station-antenna/, this article helped me to reanalyze how they work now and what new modernized features they have. I ordered myself a portable tram 1449 and it has a perfect performance.

Ham radio came first. There's also packet radio which came before satellite Internet.

CORRECTION: It was the 31 club on channel 31-AM. They had an alternate gathering channel on one of the “illegal” sideband channels at the time when AM would get too noisy.
