It's almost completely the daughter's fault. She let the kid in and snuck him upstairs, then threw him under the bus when they got caught. He got shot because she didn't want to get in trouble, and because he got belligerent with the father (possibly because he was pissed about being betrayed by the girl.)

So at this point the father thinks the boy is an intruder/rapist. He calls 911 (to "let society handle it"), but things escalalate before the police arrive. The boy appears to reach for a weapon, the father fires. Understandable, and justifiable.
