Sold most of my stock today
Posted by: Cashed Out and Sleeping Well ()
Date: March 13, 2014 04:10PM

Too much shit going on and downside risk for me.

Never a bad idea to take some money off the table I suppose.

Still have some but most of that typically trades counter-market.

We'll see whether I'm a genius or an idiot in the coming months.

I sold almost ALL my shit close to a year ago. In hindsight it was way too early but I don't have the stomach to go thru what some did in 2008.

Gonna stop sometime. No ones made shit until they've cashed out.

Hate to be cynical but I'm not buying big again until the bottom of the next disaster.

I pulled out in December, should have held a little longer. Oh well.

I would say you made a good choice selling. What goes up must come down

So wingnut, you missed out on an average 20% return this last year? Lesson learned, timing the market is hard to do.

Cashed Out; You better get ready to jump back in, as the market can and will swing back up quickly. Again, timing the market is hard to do.

Keep in mind the markets going up and down is mostly a result of investors playing the market and making money easier than you and I can. Its not a realistic reflection on where the world is going, beyond a short terms bad news cycle. Read up on Warren Buffets philosophy.

Lastly, look at the attached chart for the S&P. What do you notice? There's a retreat (decline) BEFORE the S&P breaks into a new high. In other words there's a down then a better UPSIDE.

BTW, this from CNN:

"Wall Street is waiting to see what happens in Sunday's Crimean referendum on joining the Russian Federation, and what that outcome may mean for markets.

In addition, China announced that retail sales and industrial production were both worse than expected and that helped add to worries that the story out of China won't be a good one for investors anytime soon. "

Does anyone think these two stories will have a prolonged effect on our economy? Has anyone noticed how the same (fickle) investors drive the markets back up because of some form of "good news"?

Don't be reactive to the news cycle.

Not really 'timing the market' but rather simply taking profits. I was out before the 2008 crash and mostly in cash then and I've made a ton of money in recent years since after buying back in near the lows.

And it typically peaks just before it drops big. Extend your graph back longer term and ask Boomers how just blindly sitting on your money has worked out. Whether they realize it or not even if they've stayed in the market, adjusting for inflation most still are down +10% or more from Black Monday, the dot.com bust, etc., days. I don't play day-to-day other than in a few instances with fun money. But I learned my lesson about not taking money off the table back then.

Also, it's not necessarily an either/or situation as it tends to be portrayed in the typical simple general investment advice. There can be a happy medium between reactive trading and always sitting tight expecting that you'll always be better off. Capital preservation is more important than missing a few % in a toppy market. From cash, I can always get back in whenever. The other side of that equation doesn't work out nearly as well. Much harder to make up lost capital/profits.

In any case, you need to be comfortable with your choices and at this point I wasn't anymore so out the door I go for now.

How many different stocks and or funds were you in? Guessing not too many so it's easier to get out/in.

Sold 7 of 11.

Tightened up my stops on 2.

Did nothing with 2 others. One being a relatively low-cost contra-market and the other being an MLP which pays based on oil/gas prices versus tracking the market.

For the record, I'm not trying to convince anybody. Posted this mostly just to keep myself honest.

Well you certainly know how to profit from market tops by selling ahead of a 30% runup, you should have no problem identifying a new bottom to buy back into. 20% loss and you'd still be buying higher than where you panicked out.

I don't panic for shit, I tap out when things are good instead of staying and playing and waiting for luck to run out.

Three years + and your replying? A long nap or too much of the glass pipe? You could be a case study for drug affects on the brain and motor skills.

I know this thread is from 2014 but I am thinking about taking my 245% Obama profit and my 24.8% Trump profit and getting out. Maybe leave 50k in there for fun.

If you have to post some arbitrary bullshit on a forum, then you are either a liar or loser. Probably both.
