Flying it directly into the sea would be like flying it into a concrete barrier, its aluminum body would disintegrete into little jagged pieces, its seat cushions would dislodge and float on the surface as designed to. There would be tremendous amounts of debris if that were the case.

If the terrorists gently landed it into the ocean and it sank mostly intact that could be the case.

They're saying the plane may have turned back. Why would terrorists order a plane to turn back to peaceful little Malaysia? And if it did turn back then why was no mayday issued or distress communication sent.

There's only one conclusion. The plane encountered an unidentified flying object. When the pilots attempted to communicate their sighting their communications were scrambled. They tried to turn back away from the object and after they made the turn they lost control of the aircraft at which point the entire airplane was abducted by the alien ship for scientific study.

Looks like the only active leads are the passports and the cell phone(s) pinging. I think it may have crashed on an island or an atoll. The cell phones would've been submerged in water for a good 48-72 hours by now.

The plane veered of course and crash landed on North Sentinel island, where they were taken captive by the uncontacted prehistoric people inhabiting the island.

Not too many cell towers in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand to be triangulating anything.

Actually that's a good idea, have a plane or two that can clone any cell phone service and have them triangulate cell phones over the water. Genius.

You can probably just add a piece of equipment to an aircraft. Also, they really need to get with the times with these airplanes communicating flight data in real time automatically and getting their coordinates after a crash.

If not all planes those which operate over water.

You better notify the NTSB because it was one of their people who made this statement.

And another internet warrior bites the dust!

"Localising a pinger from the surface in shallow water is relatively easy, as described above. This task becomes increasingly difficult as water depth increases, however, because the direction is affected by both the horizontal bearing and the depression angle to the beacon (Figure 2). When trying to locate a pinger beacon in deep water, the detection equipment should be installed on a self-propelled underwater vehicle (either an ROV/AUV or a manned submersible). However, this presupposes that the position is already known to within the maximum 2-3km detection range. When aircraft debris is scattered over a large area, as with the recent Air France 447 accident off the Brazilian coast in depths up to 3.5km, a grid search must be conducted using underwater acoustic listening equipment. This equipment must be deployed as deep as possible to overcome the bearing/depression angle conflict (such as on the nuclear submarine described in a news feature in the July 2009 issue of Hydro International). The additional time required to mobilise and carry out this search highlights the second major limitation of fitting CAT aircraft with pinger beacons: that of their limited operational life"

I think it's becoming increasingly clear that this mess is completely fucked up due to the fact that we are dealing with a borderline 3rd world country which is also a hot bed for terrorists.

The Malaysian authorities (for lack of a better word) seem to be completely inept, right from the point where they let someone on the plane with a stolen passport. That would not happen in a civilized modern country. I think they are in on this and hiding something.

They've obviously done this before and expect no checks in Beijing, Frankfurt, and Amsterdam. Interpol said the database is almost never checked.

If the plane did turn around and make it across the land to the straights, or even near the shore of any populated region, surely there must have been a "hit" on one of the cell towers by a passenger's cell phone.

I'm sure authorities collected all of the phone numbers of the passengers so they must be looking for hits. Perhaps the NSA can help?

Of course this assumes they were anywhere near 1st world tech and not just cow pastures.

Stop calling me Shirley.

Malaysian military has denied tracking the 370 flight.

*Unidentified plot is detected at 02:15 am MYT, 200 miles NorthWest of Pulau Pinang, Malaysia. Radar operator concluded the unidentified item is going up-north, not a threat, so no interception. Authorities are unsure the unidentified plot is MH370, and are corroborating with other parties' radar reading to confirm this.

*Not sure if the primary radar is pick up the same aircraft that attempted turn back is MH370, to be on the safe side, SAR is expanded to Straits of Malacca.
