"A Crimean parliament decision to hold a referendum on separation from Ukraine is an "illegitimate decision," interim Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said Thursday.

"Crimea was, is, and will be an integral part of Ukraine," he said at a news conference.

Lawmakers in the Crimea region voted earlier in favor of leaving Ukraine for Russia, which already has the Black Sea peninsula under de facto control, and set a referendum on the move for 10 days' time.

Citizens of Crimea will face a simple choice: Stay in Ukraine or join Russia.

It's not clear how easily the region could split off if the referendum endorses the move".

Ukraine would have to declare the vote illegal and then respond to the already occupied territory. I don't think they have the stomach for it and I don't think the UN, EU or anyone else is going to bust a grape.

China is on the sec council and they couldn't give a rats ass.

I learned recently that Crimea was "gifted" to Ukranine by Stalin after WW2,. With a population that is majority ethic Russki and no deep history, I think Ukraine is going to change the channel and accept defeat.

The rest of Ukraine will shift even further toward the EU and the Russians inherit a politically unstable region that they'll need to pump billions into. I guess Putin wins but it sounds like a real hassle.
