The United States does pay olympians who medal. They have done that for decades. I think it is on the order of $10,000 though for a gold, maybe a little more. There is a word for these payments/awards but I can't recall what it is.

They also require taxes be paid on any awards received. Including the cash value of the medal itself.

Not to mention they can make big bucks with product endorsements, writing books, making tv appearances, and going on a lecture circuit.
