13 House Democrats offer bill demanding government study on Internet hate speech

Thirteen House Democrats have proposed legislation that would require the government to study hate speech on the Internet, mobile phones and television and radio.

The bill, sponsoed by Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) and 12 other House Democrats, would look at how those medai are used to "advocate and encourage violent acts and the commission of crimes of hate."

The Hate Crime Reporting Act, H.R. 3878, is meant to update a 20-year old study from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). That study, delivered to Congress in 1993, looked at hate speech on radio, TV and computer bulletin boards.

The problem of course, is that hate speech is relative and subjective and laws prohibiting it will always be abused by those in power to squelch opposition. As far as I can tell, there's nothing in the Constitution that says you don't have the right to not be offended by someone.

But, let them propose this silly legislation while we have record numbers living on government assistance, record numbers not in the workforce, record deficits, record partisanship.

I guess that's what you do when your party was severely buttkicked in elections and you have no hope of retaking the chamber.

In all seriousness, that was my first thought upon reading the article. If they pass laws like this then they pass laws defining what is and what is not hate speech and put penalties and enforcement behind it. This site would be toast no matter which side of the political aisle you're on.
