Why Giant's Howard ad has so many people upset

A Giant grocery store ad welcoming back Howard University students from winter break has rankled the Howard community because the ad pictured a young, white female. The vast majority of students at Howard, a historically black university, are African-American.

People started calling the company out on Twitter late last week, noting that the picture of the woman in the ad doesn't reflect a typical Howard University student.

The ad ran in circular specific to the O Street Market store, to let students know that the store as City Market at O, near Howard, had re-opened while they were away. Classes at Howard resumed Monday.

"Unfortunately an incorrect stock photo was used in the ad and we apologize for this oversight," Jamie Miller, spokesman for Giant, told me in an email. "We wish all Howard University students a successful semester." It's unclear whether those circulars are still available in the store.

Complicating matters is that most of the tweets were directed to the @GiantFoodStores handle, which is the Twitter handle of the Giant subsidiary based in Carlisle, Pa. But the D.C.-area stores are owned by the Giant subsidiary based in Landover.

A class action lawsuit will be filed on behalf of Howard University students who were offended by the circular. Giant will settle out of court for a couple of million to avoid any bad publicity.

Send them a bucket of chicken, some cool aid and say your sorry.

this is no different than an ad showing a black guy yelling "VOTE FOR REPUBLICANS!" at a tea party event. teabaggers would be having a shit fit over it.

I don't think so..I think they'd be all for it.

Once. Just once in my lifetime. In one of these situations where a large group of people is offended and in uproar --- that the company says, "you know what, stop being a bunch of sensitive babies. If you don't like it, shop elsewhere".

Maybe they should have had a picture with a big black cop that says, "welcome back, now put that shit down cause you can't afford it anyhow."

Even the Vietnamese embassy/consulate building is pretty much right acrross from Howard Univ.

They are pretty blind to see the area is very mixed filled with lots of retired jewish ladies and vietnemse. That area to woodly park zoo was famous for adverts in the 1950-60's for apartment living with no need to leave your apartment building as the basement had all the shopping needs in their apratment complex.

Food store and hair cut beauty salon and gift stores.

I'm confused. Did they want an ad with a black woman holding a WIC card and an ad for fried chicken at the bottom? What's wrong with generic? I don't see a white ad aimed at offending the African American race. I see a generic ad saying "welcome back".

Does this mean I should be offended by the sign at my local Safeway welcoming me that has an Asian woman when Asian women are hardly to be found in my part of the barrio?

Aren't we supposed to support diversity? Isn't a white woman attending a historically black college considered diversity?

Maybe even she'd had been a fat-assed white woaman with a little niglet then they'd have accepted it.

I just came out of a CVS store . There was a picture of a nice looking black girl on the wall advertising for the flu shot, but I harly see any blacks in that store. Should I be offended since the picture doesn't represent the average CVS shopper?

No. Diversity is a one way street. When white people are the minority in a couple dozen more years will there be some affirmative action for us? I doubt it.
