"Virginia gun sales increased by nearly 11 percent and reached an all-time high in 2013.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/1euGJMJ ) that the Virginia State Police logged background checks for nearly 480,000 gun transactions last year, topping the old record of just over 432,000 set the year before. State police began doing the criminal background checks in late 1989.
Police said gun sales were especially brisk early in the year. Transactions for the first four months were up 115.8 percent, 38.5 percent, 41 percent and 28.4 percent.
Gun sales on Black Friday also set a record, but overall sales in November and December dipped from 2012 sales for those months.

I'm also curious why you're not ranting and raving about his seventeen year old cousin who was killed in the strike, perhaps because while he may or may not have been innocent he's not an American? I have always ardently opposed the drone program, unlike the right who saw no issue with it until this boy, whose only difference from other targets was he was a US citisen, became a casualty of it.

I'm not sure what you're referring to but no, they're trained to run a weapon quickly and effectively, teamwork, etc., they're not trained to cope with the physical and psychological effects of combat stress. Things happen when one is subjected to incoming fire that cannot be recreated in a training environment.

I never disagreed with you on and armed person being there, where I was disagreeing with someone was the idea of training and arming people whose jobs are not law enforcement, are not security and do not have the experience to be operating a firearm under stress. One or two police officers responding to a school shooting is infinitely safer and more effective than having half the school armed and mistaking each other for the shooter.

If you are talking about having a cop in every school, that's never gonna happen. Already been discussed and too expensive. But it's no different than selecting a staff member to undergo firearms training. Surely you arent saying cops are the only people smart enough to handle a weapon in a confrontational situation?
Either way, an armed school is a safer school. That's my point from the start.

What you're then proposing is training teachers to a law enforcement level so that they can then take on two jobs instead of one, not to mention a job they didn't volunteer for. It's not the handling of the weapon, it's the handling of oneself when confronted by an armed individual who, in all likelihood, will not hesitate to kill you. Throw in the potential for several other faculty members to be armed and you now have one ill intentioned shooter and several armed faculty members who, in all likelihood don't know each other, running around the building attempting to take or protect targets while simultaneously attempting to eliminate the ill intentioned shooter. Throw responding law enforcement into the mix and now you have the potential for serious confusion as to who is the ill intentioned shooter.

How many small town back woods cops do you know that have any experience pulling a gun and shooting a bad guy?
I live in a small town and I doubt the cops here have ever even pulled their gun out of the holster except on the range. Any intelligent person can be trianed how to react in a specific situation. Most cops arent real smart anyway. Believe me, I know several.

The point is their entire career is based on threat assessment and response, security, etc., not just weapons handling. I'd rather have someone whose occupation is based on the aforementioned than a merely a gun savvy faculty member.

Not other worldly, their training is based on threat assessment, threat manipulation, weapons of different types and they use it on a daily basis. A faculty member who took a firearms class and has to recertify, if they do, every so many months is not an equivalency.

Again, no one comparing a cop to a soldier. I'm not sure how many people become cops because they can't get any other job but when a lot of these departments require bachelors degrees... Prince William Police Department pay is decent for the area, the hours are actually pretty damn good. You don't become a cop with the expectation of never getting your hands dirty, you're going to deal with dodgey folk. Any job that grants excessive power tends to draw authoritarians.

A resource officer doesnt deal with shooters any more than the janitor does until one shows up. I can only comment the ones I went to school with and they definitely prevented some dodgey shit. Dealing with an active shooter is more than point and shoot. A paper target doesn't induce stress and it's side effects and paper target doesn't shoot back.

Then you're talking about basic firearms handling, if you're going to train someone to adequately respond to something like an active shooter you have to put them through courses.
Rotate the officers already on the force, a day a week as a resource officer. Merely a schedule shuffle.

I have a feeling Chicago will go the route of DC. Technically allowing it but in reality making it such a drawn out expensive process that its a de-facto ban from the administrative side. Someone did an article about getting a gun in DC it was something like several hundred dollars and 6 months of considerable effort to finally get permission to buy a hand gun.
I am glad to see someone in Detroit wising up though. I wonder how long the new Chief will hold that position though once the Mayor and City Council has a talk with him. Then again it got so bad there they may be desperate enough to put ideology aside.
