Wait..."The Fighting Irish" is racist too.

I mean are ALL Irish people combative? No.

Look for ND to change to simply "The Irish". They played a football game in Dublin and there were no protesters regarding the name of the team.

I can't believe that someone actually has to spell it out for you, but the analogy would be if Notre Dame's team name was the "Fighting Micks"

Yes. I know that the University of North Dakota caught flack for the name, and changed it. I don't know whether that's an offensive name or not, but that's not the point. The point is that the term "Irish" is not offensive to anyone. The term "Redskins" is offensive to many.

Irish is the proper term for that ethnic group. Redskin is not the proper term for Native Americans, and it's considered offensive by many. Would naming the DC team the "Native Americans" be offensive. I don't know, don't care, and I don't think it's relevant to the argument

No, no...that's MY point. The name of the team isn't..."The Irish" it's "The Fighting Irish". There's an implication there that ALL Irish are combative and...they aren't. When the Potomac Drainage Basin Indigenous People change their name, look for ND to drop "Fighting" and become "The Irish" formally.

I don't think so, but I can't say that I'm not unbiased here. I'm Irish, and I went to ND. I never thought that the "Fighting" part ever conveyed anything other than that we were tough. Not that we were brawling drunken micks. The history of the name, while unclear, doesn't have anything in particular to do with the ethnicity, I think.

As stated by a previous poster, "Fighting Irish" does not refer to drunken brawling in a pub. It implies perseverance.

Irish isn't offensive like the epithet "Redkins". Suppose their was an NGL team called the Big-Lipped Niggers. Would that presumptuous to get offended?

It does? Then why not call 'em the "Perserverant Irish".

The logo is a little green leprecaun with his fists balled and raised...sure looks like he's spoiling for a fight to me.

Since I'm Irish, I say I get to decide.

The word mick is a lot like the word nigger. If you call an Irish guy that you don't know a fucking mick in a Philly or Boston bar, he might whoop your ass. If he's your buddy, you can call him a fucking mick all night and its more like a compliment.

I have always thought of the Fighting Irish as a comical drunk Irish dwarf who likes to fight. So do most people I know. If you think it's not derogatory you're fooling yourself. Or maybe you're just too drunk to notice.

No one wants to compare the Fighting Irish to the Fighting Sioux?

One name was changed after pressure....

These name controversies do nothing but provide a cause for White Guilters and moralistic libdouches to showcase their "tolerance".

Not so much now, but it used to be. If you understand the history of the term, Fighting Irish is derogatory. It conjured up image of uneducated, working class people, usually immigrants, who would get boozed up and engage in brawls at the drop of a hat.

Also if you read older English texts you will find the term "Irish" being applied by those subjects of the British king that the English elites considered to be backwards or rebellious, whether they were of Irish nationality or not.

If the term "Irish" was offensive at one time, what was the unoffensive term at that time for someone from Ireland?

Within the last 100 years there were frequently signs hung in businesses on the East Coast of the U.S. which read, "Help Wanted, Irish Need Not Apply".

"Fighting Irish" is racist.

Just because it was the correct term didn't mean it wasn't also used as an insult. Calling a Christian a "Jew" would be viewed as an insult well into the 20th century. Some Arabs would view it as an insult today. "Mexican" today is used not only to describe a person from Mexico, but also as an insult for any person primarily of indian descent who came to this country from a nation to the south without proper authorization. If you go back to the 18th and 19th centuries there were people born in Ireland who would call themselves "Anglo-Irish" or "Scotch-Irish" in an effort to distinguish themselves.

Of course it doesn't imply you're tough; if you went to Notre Lame, you're the antithesis of tough. You're an arrogant, spoiled, mommy's boy who thinks the world revolves around you and the BMW they bought you for your 16th birthday. I take a dump in your precious grotto every time I'm forced to travel to that special ed facility.

I'm sorry if you were hurt because your ancestors were Irish, or because they were anti-Irish anti-Catholic bigots. Facts are facts though. Just Google "anti Irish sentiments 19th century America" and you will find plenty of information on this.
