The beloved quizmaster hosted the NBC4 Washington DC game show "It's Academic" for 50 years. He passed away on Thursday at his home in Potomac, Maryland, after suffering complications from pneumonia.
He worked as a radio and TV announcer, as well as a talk
show host, but he is best remembered for his 50-year stint on "It's Academic." He stepped down from his role as host in 2011 and retired.
Former contestants on the show include Hollywood producer Bruce Cohen, political adviser and TV pundit George Stephanopoulos and author Michael Chabon, while actress Sandra Bullock appeared on the program as a cheerleader.
I was on that show back in the mid-80s. Went as part of my school's team. Lot of fun. Even then as a kid I could tell that Mac was a real professional. He'll be missed.
I loved that show.
The show used to make me feel much smarter than I really was because I knew 98% of the answers. In reality, the show and it's questions were really easy and meant for that very reason.
