I actually saw Kyuss open for White Zombie back in 94-95. I had no idea who they were but I distinctly remember thinking their show was really cool . It wasn't until many years later that I realized that them and Queens of the Stone Age were the same dudes.
Okkervil River is hipster music. I don't really know their albums but they do have some catchy songs that I like. I wouldn't be surprised if they became more popular in the mainstream, they seem like that kind of band.

I actually had to look that name up. I have a pretty big music library, 17-18k songs, but probably less than 10 of them are Motown stuff. Not a fan.

music right now is in a real rut. There isnt a lot thats truly great; but there is a lot that is just meh. That being said I dusted off a few CD mixes I burned from the 90's and was listening to the GO soundtrack and wondering why the hell I liked remixes, Techno and LEN. Steal my sunshine? No I dont like butter tarts whatever the hells those are. That remix of the steppenwolf song is shit. The only slightly good song is the "lounge singer" guy song on that soundtrack. Tommy somnething and his orchestra "remix"

Sam Cooke is not Motown. Sam Cooke is a mix of R&B, soul and pop and maybe a slight jazz influence. Anyway, Meeper can still be cool regardless of what he does or does not listen to.

Would you not consider the Motown sound to be a soul and pop mixture? It can be argued that Motown is merely a label, but the term "Motown" when used in musical terms, has evolved to mean much more.

That's right, Sam Cooke is not Motown. And the last guy was also right to some extent: Motown was not strictly a record label, but it was a distinct sound that categorizes certain artists quite neatly, the same as Stax categorizes the grittier, less polished sounds of Otis or the Mar-Keys. Sam Cooke you could argue is, to the modern ear, just a little bit hokey as far as lyrics go; but you won't find a finer vocalist, ever, in the history of recorded music than him. The fact that Meeper has no appreciation for him or Motown, is a crime. And this man professes to know music. I rest my case.
