It's unfortunate that your only exposure to the military has been driving by the Pentagon but mine has been quite different. A retired 05/06 who can jump from contractor to GS it's because they've met the education/experience requirements. You don't gain those sitting on your ass in the military. Look beyond the Pentagon pencil pushers into the real military and I doubt if you could cut it. You think everybody in the military who isn't in The Sandbox is stationed in a Honolulu country club? This is only the Army. I've known Navy who have spent months on end in submarines
and others who have been posted in places like Shemya, Alaska
which is nothing but a rock in the Aleutians. BTW, if you scroll down the
list of assignments on the link you'll also realize a lot of these places are
"unaccompanied" status which means you leave your wife and kids somewhere
stateside. Your problem to deal with. BTW, once you raise your right hand you now
have a 24/7 job. There's no overtime, holiday pay, or guarantee that you
can take annual leave when you want.
