Why are they so poor? It looks like they speak English and Spanish. Are they Asian? Or Hispanic? Isn't it in Asia? Why are they living in shacks?

Most of the country is borderline 3rd world.
They are mostly just dumb ass farmers. Ever heard of any earth shattering or world changing ideas or news coming out of there.
They are also well known for teenage prostitutes that get shipped to the USA.

Visiting friends living in Manila, we were greeted by armed guards at the "driveway" leading to their home.
The poverty in the Philippines wasn't anything I hadn't already seen while living in Asia. You almost get used to it.

The southern part is infested by muslims. Anytime you have people who are ignorant and suspicious you can be sure the muslims aren't far behind.

The Filipinos I met were good, kind, decent, and incredibly grateful to America for saving them from the Japanese. The old men call them savages.
In Hong Kong, most of the domestic workers are Filipinas, hired as amahs/maids.
On Sundays, thousands gather in Victoria Park or in the HSBC atrium and do each other's nails. It's a sight to see.

I reminisce.
I loved living in Hong Kong.
It was, well, unbelievable.
My apartment was up on The Peak, overlooking Hong Kong on one side and the South China Sea on the other.
There was this bar in Central. One drink and you were drunk.
I used to take my jet-lagged NY friends there. LOL

I was running on this gorgeous path on The Peak and a group of Chinese were laughing at me.... Chinese don't jog.
There were maybe 6 or 7 of them. They were walking towards me and purposely blocked the path, laughing at the gweilo running all by herself.
I picked up my pace and ran straight into them with my elbows out. They scattered.
One fell down.
It was wonderful.
I was four months pregnant.
I was running on this gorgeous path on The Peak and a group of Chinese were laughing at me.... Chinese don't jog.
