Do women really hate the word 'panties'?

I used the term a few days ago and the two ladies I was talking to said that they hate the word and that most other women do to...what else am I supposed to call them? I know women hate the word "moist" but are there others?

Panties are fine with me - not that I should care.

The one thing that makes me wonder - there was a website talking about ways to detect if men and women were cheating on their partners.

One absurd suggestion was to get a girlfriend's or wife's purse to see if there are wadded up panties in the purse.

Why, oh why, would there be wadded up panties in a purse?

Panties is fine, but undies works too.

Lingerie is a popular choice but it's not very definitive. It can cover too many items.

I've heard a number of women refer to them as underthings. Seems like they have issues to me.

I find that men actually dislike the word more.

Usually because it's used as part of a sentence about their state of being such as:

Don't get your panties in a bunch, wad or twist.

Or

Keep your panties on tough guy.

You can thank Hollywood for the proliferation of that words use.
