Why does everything have to be upscale upscale upscale now?

Springfield Mall was shit but it was more fun.
Metal heads sneaking alcohol into the mall and drinking it in the main food court. Smoking cigarettes in the arcades.

My friend lived in the apartments behind the Springfield K Mart.
It was all white, inexpensive and there was no god damn fitness center bullshit.

The old 9:30 club smelled like shit but it was awesome.

The Capital Centre was a shithole but had much better concerts and a the parking lot scene was legendary.

RFK was cheaper and a more exciting atmosphere to watch a football game.

Probably because it's too damn expensive to build them. Somebody's got to pay those land costs. And it won't be the hoodrats at the mall.

Because when developers build these things they want credit worthy tenants to lease up the commercial space. Mom & Pop probably aren't very credit worthy but Starbux, Panera, Apple, J.Crew are and will pay more rent and be ok with long term agreements. Of course to appeal to those types of tenants they have build 'upscale'.

Springfield Mall was far from being considered upscale back then.

I'm more worried about all the townhomes and single family McMansions built during the housing boom. They were not built to last generations, and most will probably be worn out by the time the occupants finish paying off their mortgages. Imagine an entire county filled with shoddily constructed buildings like Fairfax in 20-30 years.

The area was a mix of some well off (ie, admirals, top federal workers, lawyers) and locals. The few who were paid well at the top of huge armies that were not paid well at all, ie like teachers. The local county workers were extremely jealous.

The locals (ie, fcps workers) decided their superiors were full of crap and took over. Doing whatever the hell they wanted, whenever the hell they wanted. Decided their pay should be as high, then higher, as an admiral.

And while not all counties had a big gov/military base as economic fuel nearby. All counties across usa began floating bonds: meaning pyramiding, meaning drawing a line that gov families did well and others choked. And crime families would be free of any worry or toil.

Today's school system workers are paid more than yesterday's admirals.

It's simply criminal.

No one can get the board to approve "shopping centers" but if you add "upscale" you are improving the community (and the board members will believe there will be kick backs available since you must be flush).

I would rather have Douglas at my upscale mall than some welfare people on public assistance pretending to be upscale spending their entire paychecks on upscale clothing.
Doug was up front about who he was. He was not trying to be something he was not.

Springfield Mall was the most "upscale" in the country, at that time. Fucking princess diana visited it.

Nothing is more upscale now, just your nostalgia makes you think things were simpler bak in the day.

Fairfax no longer has a lot of open space. Redeveloping with residential and office is the way to keep the property tax base growing and keeping the foot traffic for shopping centers up afte 6 pm.
