Starbucks Joins other Chains - Bans All Guns in Stores
Posted by: Kimmy S ()

Another great reason to buy my morning cup of jo at Starbucks! Hurray!

Sept 17 (Reuters) - Starbucks Corp Chief Executive Howard Schultz requested on Tuesday that the coffee chain's customers leave their firearms at home, shifting company policy amid an increasingly fractious debate over U.S. gun rights in the wake of multiple mass shootings.

The request is being made in part because more people have been bringing guns into Starbucks over the last six months, prompting confusion and dismay among some patrons and employees, Schultz told Reuters in an interview.

In an open letter to customers issued late Tuesday, the chief executive said: "Our stores exist to give every customer a safe and comfortable respite from the concerns of daily life."

Starbucks' long-standing policy had been to default to local gun laws, including "open carry" regulations that allow people to bring guns into stores. It has nearly 7,000 company-operated U.S. stores.

That policy had frustrated U.S. gun-control advocates, who have persuaded many other restaurants and retailers to ban weapons in their stores and worked hard to get Starbucks to follow suit.

So according to other sources, there is a little more to this story than what the OP and Rueters are saying above...

Starbucks has "requested" that patrons not bring weapons into their stores, but they have not "banned" them...

From a story on Foxnews.com (about as far right as Rueters is far left)...

"Schultz hopes people will honor the request not to bring in guns but says the company will nevertheless serve those who do.

"We will not ask you to leave," he said."

Kimmy S must feel so safe and secure knowing that no criminal or madman will shoot up a Starbucks now that Starbucks have "banned" firearms.

Your naivety would be cute if it wasn't so stupidly dangerous.

And no, I am not some sort of gun nut, just a realist that understands that banning weapons in places doesn't make them safer.

IIRC, the movie theater in Aurora banned firearms. How'd that work out?

Unless you're a cop, you have to be a real douchebag to openly carry in a store.

Gives RESPONSIBLE gun owners a bad name.

Hey OP, do you know the difference between "requesting" and "banning"? It would appear that you don't. Sad little man.

I agree. These nut jobs are wanta be cops that think having a gun on them will keep them from being robbed.

They wouldn't last five minutes in the hood or a bad DC neighborhood. They'd be robbed and shot after pissing their pants.

Yuppies with CCP's, what a laugh.

I agree.
Home is where the Navy Yard employee's personal guns were on Monday.
Home is where the Sandy Hook employee's personal guns were when they were attacked.
Home is where the patron's personal guns were when the theater in Aurora, CO was attacked.
Home is where the soldiers and staff's guns were when Ft. Hood was attacked.
Home is where the student, faculty and staff's guns were when Virginia Tech was attacked.
Home is where the teachers and staff's guns were when Columbine was attacked.

However once attacked, the call immediately goes out (always too late) for someone with a gun.

It will keep those idiots with CCP from "Oops it accidently went off and killed somebody. Sorry"

It probably just to get insurance rates lowered at Starbucks.

Maybe, If those idiots don't do it in Starbucks, they will just do it someplace else though. Give a gun to a retard; and there will be consequences.

Sure, because that happens all the time. Like just the other day I was standing in line at SFW to pay for my baby mama's food with my WIC checks and some cracka with a CCP had it gun go off right on the spot. I saw first hand how the safety slid itself to off, the trigger then quickly moved and BAM! Shots fired! Shots fired!

Get a clue or get off the internet.

How many times has a CCP holder been in a store (Starbucks or other) and their gun accidently went off and killed someone? Do libs just sit around and think up the stupidest situation they can think of to see how many of their kind will agree with them? No wonder they cannot have an intelligent conversation about guns.

And pigs fly: Yes, yes they do. They sit around in their echo chamber and work themselves up into a lather to the point where the divergence between their beliefs and reality no longer matters.

Starbucks didn't ban gun owners!

Starbucks just said gun owners were not welcome and please go some other place.

Aka, Starbucks culture is one that doesn't support guns.

The chief executive said: "Our stores exist to give every customer a safe and comfortable respite from the concerns of daily life."

Reading and comprehension is not a strong suit for you is it? What was said by Starbucks is discussed above. I suggest you find the smartest person you know and have them explain what was really said. Take these baby steps and you will be able to think for yourself soon.

Cite one case where that has ever happened?
I carry concealed with the emphasis on concealed.
I routinely carry where signs forbid guns.
Mine is never exposed.
You would never know unless it is needed.

Do everyone remember NRA solution to Newton school is to have more gun in response? I guessing after this Monday, they had find out that this proposal does not work. Even if it is a gun free zone. I am sure that there were hero carrying weapon of their own also in that yard and it did not save any lives.

It time to stop taking the coward way out of this epidemic and come up with a good solution that will help save lives. It look like it was a background check issues this time that contribute to this tragedy.

Is that really your best response? We are talking about Starbucks and how gun free zones are not effective. What does how many lives I saved have to do with the topic?

"Our stores exist to give every customer a safe and comfortable respite from the concerns of daily life."

That would include people like me, who don't want to be exposed to your fucking guns. The fact that you feel compelled to openly carry them is an implied threat to everyone around you. And, let's face it, you're not carrying a gun for protection - you're carrying it to feel like 'a real man'. You're all a bunch of George Zimmerman's just waiting to go off.

Move to Baltimore then, or Chicago, or Cleveland if youre that stupid. Youre exposed to hundreds of guns a day in VA if not more and you dont have a clue theyre there because responsible people own them. But morons like you think they arent around unless you see it.

I'd like to say who the hell really cares. I don't drink coffee and when I did, Starbucks often tasted like the oil that drips from my car.

What more could people expect from such a Liberal company?

Time to ban Starbucks. It was very easy for me to do ...and, I have about $1,000 extra per year in my pocket.

Buh Bye, Starbucks!!

Shultz hasn't banned guns yet, but he's trying to walk a fine line. I do think the pro-2nd people should avoid making a scene, or he will probably ban them.

But Starbucks, let me put your decision into perspective: The people who want you to ban guns in your stores, are the same assholes that were throwing garbage cans through your windows during the WTO meetings. They're the same cunts who are ranting about corporate coffee, etc, etc.

Don't be fooled into thinking these people spend more or even as much money in your stores as the pro 2nd people do.

He actually did just the opposite. He made the decision NOT to ban them. Nor did he say that gun owners should go somewhere else.

What he really said:

“Starbucks is not a policymaker, and we are not pro- or anti-gun,” he explained. “However, in excess of the last handful of months or so, we have noticed ourselves thrust into this discussion in a way that is not constant with the values and guiding principles of our firm.”

Schultz cited the use of Starbucks retailers as the site for demonstrations by both gun-management advocates and gun fanatics in the months subsequent the fatal Dec. twelve mass capturing at Sandy Hook Elementary University in Newtown, Conn.

He explained that individuals on both sides of the concern experienced used the cafés “as staging grounds for their own situation as recently as final month. And in check out of that, Starbucks has been mischaracterized and misrepresented on either aspect of the issue.”

Schultz also explained that laws that enable citizens to carry firearms have been “very confusing and ambiguous for numerous folks about the place.”

As a result, “when a particular person legally is carrying a gun and decides to wander into a Starbucks retailer, I consider our buyers and young young children are tremendously awkward and fairly jarred from the encounter,” he said. “And we have just come to the summary that we are not anti-gun, we are not professional-gun, but guns ought to not be element of the Starbucks knowledge.”

Schultz emphasized that Starbucks was not issuing an outright ban on guns at its retailers, nor would it implement its ask for that patrons not have weapons inside.

“So anyone who does not respectfully honor the policy, we are still going to serve you, we are likely to honor your enterprise as a consumer, and we are going to go on with our working day,” he stated. “But we think the large majority of Americans will recognize the policy, will think it really is reasonable, and most individuals will, I feel, regard the request.”

Sounds reasonable to me and I'd expect that most would respect that.

OK, let's put things into perspective. More gay Starbucks barristas die of AIDS each year that deaths that might occur in a Starbucks due to a gun being carried. Yet, guns are not permitted, but having a gay barrista with AIDS work there is?

Yes, the big bad scary guns. People should be frightened every time they see one because you never know when it will just go off and kill somebody for no apparent reason. It is so jarring to see someone carrying a weapon. They must be a criminal. Only criminals carry guns. Therefore no one but criminals need guns.

Of course, you could walk outside and the crazy who thinks you "cut line" could run you over with their perfectly safe automobile (it even has airbags to protect the driver).

@ Liberal Logic 28
I was just pointing out that NRA solution to stop school shooting from happen or in progress is to response with gun is a bad idea. It true that he was shot dead but not before he killed so many people already so their idea is not workable solution and they are just taking easy way out instead of coming up with a good answer to a hard question.

Do you think that security around school will have training like SWAT team or Military? Background check went wrong in this incident and if I were to have my way all people with mental problem and convicted regardless of what crime will be ban from having weapon.

Sadly, this is the level of idiocy we're dealing with here. You're too fucking STUPID to own a gun.

NRA quotes are just stupid in general so let's forget about them.

The NRA just repeats the same mantra to its sheepalle herd, aka "the solution to anything is more guns."

Lets make this issue simple.
Arm the kids. Children have the right to defend themselves.

Children do not have the right to defend themselves. If a child gets into a fight trying to defend themselves, they are expelled as well as the person who started the fight. The children must conform to the system. This is part of the wussification of America. It makes it easier to take guns, rights and other property away from the huddled masses.

So your solution is to have him just continue on with the rampage then with no one to challenge him then?

The security at the Naval Yard obviously had some issues, allowing that to be turned over to private companies instead of having the MPs or some Marines doing it was not a wise choice.

That said having it there is better than not having it there. It at least slowed him down, but no one has ever said anything is full proof. SEALs are the most highly training fighting force in the world and they get killed. The only thing you can do is try and have the best chance of stopping it when it happens. Having no one with the ability to stop them doesnt do that.

No I dont, but do you think even the police have training like a SWAT team or the Military because they dont. School shootings are extremely rare to begin with but its something that gets everyone all worked up. Having gun lockers around the school or in some classrooms would at least give a fighting chance during the 20-30 minutes shooters roam free before the police do anything. There was a shooting in a GA school that was stopped when an assistant principle went to his car and got his gun and stopped the shooter before he could leave and go to another school.

You very easily could send some teachers that wanted to the same training police have for weapons over the summer, its only a week or two. There are a good amount of former Military or LEOs anyway that get into teaching later on.

The background check didnt fail in this case, there wasnt something missed that was there. Nothing had been ruled that prevented him from having a gun. If anything this just shows what BS has been being fed over the last year about shotguns. A gun is a gun is a gun, either you can have them or you cant.

The amount of things now that can result in you being convicted of a crime is asinine. Banning anyone from having one whose ever been in front of a court would be insane. It doesnt even stop anything from happening. He could have just started driving through crowds on the mall instead like weve seen. People that are set on doing horrible things like that dont just say well shucks there goes that idea.
