This is incredibly disturbing. How the hell did we get so close to having this nut be a heartbeat away from the Presidency? She didn't know Africa was a continent? She didn't know NAFTA was made up of Canada, the U.S. and Mexico? My God.

At first I thought the NAFTA was a trick question. I kept thinking "Is Bermuda involved" lol

Well, come on, be reasonable. the "North American Free Trade Agreement" could also mean a trade agreement between Washington, Oregon, North and South Dakota, Montana and Alaska. You know, north AMERICA.

Being from Wassilla, she probably thought it had something to do with Tax breaks and governemt handouts to the Inuits in Nunavut, Canada, and Eastern Alaska. Why would she ever considered Mexico "North?"

I predicted this ugly story would be told after the election but I am still shocked by the details. Republicans should be ashamed and embarassed by this whole debacle.

I was going to vote McCain until he picked Sarah Palin. Even up to the moment I walked into the voting booth, I wanted to vote McCain, but realized I was more terrified of Sarah Palin as president than a Democratic congress with a rubber stamp president.

Go Obama!

I'm glad to hear there are some people who really do put country ahead of party...

"knowlegability"? thats one heck of a word! When a political party puts ideology over facts...religious beliefs over facts...a selection of someone like Palin is consistent with that behavior. Until this country comes to grips with the concept of the absolute seperation of church and state people as stupid as Palin will continue to hold power and influence.

Montana and Oregon do not need a free trade agreement amongst themselves. They already have one.

"No tax or duty shall be laid on articles exported from any state. "

And

"No state shall, without the consent of the Congress, lay any imposts or duties on imports or exports, except what may be absolutely necessary for executing it's inspection laws: and the net produce of all duties and imposts, laid by any state on imports or exports, shall be for the use of the treasury of the United States; and all such laws shall be subject to the revision and control of the Congress. "

It is in a document called the Constitution. And I am pretty sure it pre-dated NAFTA.

I had a vague recollection of something Peggy Noonan had written shortly after Palin was picked about how she needed to watch her back with McCain's aides so I did some searching to reread that piece. What she wrote then certainly looks prescient now:

Gut: The Sarah Palin choice is really going to work, or really not going to work. It's not going to be a little successful or a little not; it's not going to be a wash. She is either going to be magic or one of history's accidents. She is either going to be brilliant and groundbreaking, or will soon be the target of unattributed quotes by bitter staffers shifting blame in all the Making of the President 2008 books. Of which there should be plenty, as we've never had a year like this, with the fabulous freak of a campaign.

Final point. Palin's friends should be less immediately worried about what the Obama campaign will do to her than what the McCain campaign will do. This is a woman who's tough enough to work her way up and through, and to say yes to a historic opportunity, but she will know little of, or rather have little experience in, the mischief inherent in national Republican politics. She will be mobbed up in the McCain campaign by people who care first about McCain and second about themselves. (Or, let's be honest, often themselves first and then McCain.) Palin will never be higher than number three in their daily considerations. They won't have enough interest in protecting her, advancing her, helping her play to her strengths, helping her kick away from danger. And – there is no nice way to say this, even though at this point I shouldn't worry about nice – some of them are that worst sort of aide, dim and insensitive past or present lobbyists with high self-confidence. She'll be a thing to them; they'll see the smile and the chignon and the glasses and think she's Truvi from Steel Magnolias. They'll run right over her, not because they're strong but because they're stupid. The McCain campaign better get straight on this. He should step in, knock heads, scare his own people and get Palin the help and high-level staff all but the most seasoned vice presidential candidates require.

The McCain campaign wasn't one about character. It was one about caricatures. John McCain was "a Maverick," who never in his life had to compromise to get anything done. Sarah Palin was the salt-of-the-Earth frontierswoman whose common sense and Americanism could trump actual intelligence. And Joe the Plumber was the "Everyman" blue collar, six-pack Joe.

The problem is, when the truth started coming out about these people, instead of being seen as more human, the contrast with their WWE personas turned the campaign into the freak show Noonan alluded to.

Try explaining that to Sarah Palin.

I don't need a lesson about the constitution. I was making fun of someone who ran for vice president who probably could use a lesson about the constitution. But thanks for taking the time to look up something I learned in 7th grade civics class.

These leaks were a complete fabrication and hoax. I hope Fox fires "Campaign Carl" over this. MSNBC should also do the same for its producers who promoted this. It is the height of journalistic laziness!

I remember seeing the Keating reference posted here...

Quote

...

In July, after the McCain campaign compared Senator Barack Obama to Paris Hilton, the Eisenstadt blog said “the phone was burning off the hook” at McCain headquarters, with angry calls from Ms. Hilton’s grandfather and others. A Los Angeles Times political blog, among others, retold the story, citing Eisenstadt by name and linking to his blog.

Last month Eisenstadt blogged that Samuel J. Wurzelbacher, Joe the Plumber, was closely related to Charles Keating, the disgraced former savings and loan chief. It wasn’t true, but other bloggers ran with it.

...

One of the reasons I usually tried to link posts to newspapers, magazines or tv news sites. There is more disinformation available on the internet then people are willing to understand (such as the French guy claiming we were behind 9/11) - and people have no easy way to discriminate between truth, propaganda, or outright lies when they find information on the net. One of the things that was interesting - as soon as any Obama blogger had a story, if you did a Google search on that item it appeared on thousands of blogger sites.

I posted it, but I also did it for shits and giggles. Me goofing around and a guy like Carl Cameron getting paid to be "a journalist" are two different things.

You didn't believe it when you posted it? I don't remember the reference but I thought it was "part of the story" at the time.
