Traveling to Nicaragua
Posted by: Mike22Va ()

I'm leaving 4/9 to goto Nicaragua, anyone ever been there? I need to rent a car, and find a hotel to stay. I have no idea what it's going to be like, and most of the web sites I found don't explain much. Find me some sites that'll help my ass not get killed. I'm going because my gf wants me to meet her extended family...

Stay the fuck out. I just moved from there, Its very dangerous... lots of shady people now lurk on the streets begging for work. There have been rumors of a influx of the Latin gangs including MS13. But, when I visit I like to eat at the Amphoria's at the intersection of Alabama and Elden.

Don't say I didn't warn you!

A friend of mine was down there last year and got into a BAD bus accident. He was on a bus and it crashed into something and tipped over, he got scrapped up pretty bad.

Driving in a Third World country is not the same as driving in the U.S. For instance, a red light, when there is one, is more like a suggestion to stop. Also, I understand in the big cities they have lots of problem with car-jackings. Good luck getting a cop to help. I would strongly suggest you contact the State Department's Latin America desk to get a profile on the country and any protocol information you need.

I think posting this in the Fairfax County forum instead of off-topic kind of makes me wonder if you have what it takes to not get killed.

Just came back from a vacation in El Salvador and stayed in the wealthy area of the capital (yes there is a wealthy area). Is your gf's family wealthy? If so, you should be fine, if not, make sure you write a will before you go! Nicaragua and Honduras are by far the poorest countries in Central America.

I understand that behind drug trafficking, Nicaragua's second largest source of revenue is the kidnapping and ransoming of American tourists. Hope you don't become a commodity. Personally, I'd say screw the girlfriend and start dating a Canadian if you want to "see the world."

Her famly isn't from the rich side, I know they don't have hot water or A.C. It seems more like a survival mission than a vacation. I found this water purifier, http://www.hudsontrail.com/viewSearchItem/2916/water%20purifier/Any/Any/110/0/?PHPSESSID=e26203973c1c4e62ca0311366a250372 So I'm covered on the drinking water. I'm also getting an SUV for a rental car, the roads there seem real fucked (1 foot pot holes).

The SUV will be a nice present for the car jackers. This chick better have a great ass for you to be putting your ass on the line like this. You'll probably end up with typhoid or some shit like that.

there are a few options for staying safe.

1) dont go with her... make up some lame reason
2) do something illegal and get caught so that you get a year probation so you cant go
3) "miss" your flight because you "forgot something" in the airport and get off right before it leaves.
4) say you cant afford it or just blow all your cash on something you really want
5) break up with that bitch.

seriously, i wouldnt visit any country that is well known for taking Americans hostage. at the very least, get a gun with a box of ammo when you get there.

You guys have it all wrong. Nicaragua is a beautiful country and the safest in central america. Don't base your opinions in what some ignorant racist kid says. It is the land of lakes and volcanoes. Best waves for surfing, friendly people and great food. You get all this at affordable prices.
