Question about Job Interview
Posted by: Dean ()
Date: August 27, 2013 04:51PM

Serious question:

If you're called to set up a job interview and they give you 4 choices, which is the best one to take:

1st time slot?
2nd time slot?
3rd time slot?
4th time slot?

I took the first one, figuring I'd be setting the bar (for good or bad) but now I'm wondering if I should have taken the last one. That way, if I do a good job, that would have left a good impression at the end of their process. Whatta ya think?

Get the time slot right after lunch. I read an article that defendants in criminal cases are more likely to receive a lighter punishment if the sentencing is done after lunch break. Im guessing the same concept might apply.

I would have gone for the last time slot. Many details of your interview will be forgotten as they interview the other three. Make sure you wow the shit out of them when you go so they remember you.

It makes no difference. Go for the time slot that works best for you. Either you have the skills and personality they want or you dont.

When I applied to Union Aerospace, they did the same thing. I took the last slot and got the job. Then again, I have a PhD in quantum physics and another PhD in astronomy, so naturally I was most qualified.

FYI: abelard and ThePackLeader were my supervisors.

Tell the panel you are gay. They will be scared shitless not to hire you.

As a poster above noted, interview periods after lunch might be characterized by languish detachment. The interviewer will be less inclined to speak, to engage.

Is this the initial screening process? If so, there will be a relatively large quality gap among candidates. High caliber candidates could exploit the gap by choosing to go 2nd, 3rd, or 4th; a swift and adept demonstration (i.e. abrupt disruption) will serve to both bolster the candidate and knock-out the immediately preceding candidate.

Turn even the subtle to your favor.

And Hispanic. Even if you're not really.

Just let them try to challenge you.

Take the last one. By then, they'll have gotten their act together and the interview will flow a lot smoother. From the interview, you should have an idea whether the job is still available or not.

It's all about taking advantage of whatever you find. If the guy's gonna be sleepy right after lunch, use small words and keep it punchy.

The advice I gave then is still valid today: how'd you get in my office and don't make me call the campus police.

This is a good point, but it works both ways. You might be the kind of person less inclined to speak and engage after lunch. If so, they will not see at your best.

Avoid the first one. Interviewing can be awkward on both sides of the table. The first one of the day will warm the interviewers up.

The 4 interviews are over 2 different days. One morning (10:00) and one in the afternoon (2:00) on each day. I took the first day, 10:00 am slot. I think I should have takend the day 2, 2:00 pm slot.
