How does one become an alcoholic?
Posted by: Alcohol ()
Date: August 25, 2013 11:28PM

I drank Vodka for the first time in a really long time. I drank more than I could handle and puked my guts out.

The next day I felt like shit, still puking and laid in bed all day. How on earth do some people do this daily? Not even hard stuff, but just beer, daily..all day and night?

Alcohol does nothing for me, no buzz, not much fun either. It just amazes me that people really enjoy doing all of that all the time.

But to each's own of course but holy crap even thinking about it now is making me nauseous.

Alcohol is a coping mechanism for those too weak to handle and face their problems. That's all.

I've heard that a lot but I honestly can't see how drinking like that can help you cope with ANYTHING, lol! I felt horrible and haven't thrown up in years. It was like inducing the flu.

Of course at the beginning of the drinking I felt okay, was having a little fun and then things turned for the worse. After puking I felt better for about 3 hours and then it just came back full force.

I drank water and Powerade and felt okay, went to sleep and puked it all up. I know you should know your limit, but even people who know their limit still end up puking or end up hungover the next morning. So I'm having trouble understanding how anyone could desire that feeling or how they think it helps with their problems, it only creates more.

It's no wonder people die from alcohol poisoning or DWI, etc.

Haha, my friends said the same thing but my friend..just thinking about it makes me sick to my stomach. If I do drink it will not be vodka...trying to 'Be the craziest one' is not worth it. I will probably do something light or fruity. I never want to feel like that again. I'd never been in so much pain before, lol.

Jeez, some people just like to get drunk for fun. Its what people with social lives do sometimes, but what would you know about that.

Was father an abusive alcoholic or something? Did he touch your no-no spot?

I agree with both posts. Some people just drink socially some people drink daily, alone..those are the ones who ABUSE it. I couldn't imagine drinking alone, mostly because I couldn't take care of myself or have anyone to act silly with. My friends weren't as drunk as me and helped me but it was literally like being a helpless infant and really embarrassing, lol.

I said specifically said "its what people with social lives do sometimes" not all the time.

You should try backing away from the keyboard and going out for drinks with actual human contact, it will be good for you.

What's wrong with having a drink? or four, six,or even eleven?
Fuck problems! The problem is everyone else.
Start in the morning, pace yourself and end when you pass out.
It's a new day so why sober up? Life's to short to waste a day sober.
The only problem I ever have is making the choice of what to drink.
I seen the world and accomplished my goals so now I just kick back and watch the rest of you fuck it up.
And I might add you're doing a swell job of it.
Cheers.

I rarely drink and even those who drink daily still have the same reaction to the poison as I did. My point was - how can someone go through that day after day or week after week?

those who drink daily do NOT have the same reaction you do

that is where you fail at understanding

Okay, maybe you're speaking from experience or something but I watched a program called "Addicted" on Alcoholism and this 24 year old male drank Vodka daily and had the same reaction as I did.

The only difference was he drank so much, to the point where his liver had developed scar tissue but still wasn't enough to get him to quit drinking.

Once more, my point is not how I reacted to it, it's how and why anyone can enjoy it "to death" basically? It's not fun, nor appealing whatsoever.

that is a case in the minority, or very very rare...

"We" - alcoholics, very rarely get any type of hangover, because we always have alcohol in our blood = never really experiencing the "morning after".

The majority of alcoholics have a BAC that would warrant a DWI almost 24 hours a day.

Everyone does eventually. So plan ahead for your demise and drink accordingly.
You might as well be drunk because you're gonna catch shit no matter what.
Alcohol isn't the problem. It solves the problem.
I've seen the world sober. Pretty fucking boring.
And the women get prettier as the day wears on.

Alcohol, my permanent accessory
Alcohol, a party-time necessity
Alchool, alternative to feeling like yourself
O Alcohol, I still drink to your health

I love you more than I did the week before
I discovered alcohol

Forget the caffe latte, screw the raspberry iced tea
A Malibu and Coke for you, a G&T for me
Alcohol, Your songs resolve like
My life never will
When someone else is picking up the bill

I love you more than I did the week before
I discovered alcohol
O Alcohol, would you please forgive me?
For while I cannot love myself
I'll use something else

I thought that Alcohol was just for those with
Nothing else to do
I thought that drinking just to get drunk
Was a waste of precious booze
But now I know that there's a time
And there's a place where I can choose
To walk the fine line between
Self-control and self-abuse

I love you more than I did the week before
I discovered alcohol
Would you please ignore that you
Found me on the floor
Trying on your camisole?
O Alcohol, would you please forgive me?
For while I cannot love myself
I'll use something else.

Would you please forgive me
Would you please forgive me

To the OP,

There are SOME answers here:

John Barleycorn by Jack London (1913)

"When the women get the ballot, they will vote for prohibition," I said. "It is
the wives, and sisters, and mothers, and they only, who will drive the nails into
the coffin of John Barleycorn----"

"But I thought you were a friend to John Barleycorn," Charmian interpolated.

"I am. I was. I am not. I never am. I am never less his friend than when he is
with me and when I seem most his friend. He is the king of liars. He is the
frankest truthsayer. He is the august companion with whom one walks with the
gods. He is also in league with the Noseless One. His way leads to truth naked,
and to death. He gives clear vision, and muddy dreams. He is the enemy of life,
and the teacher of wisdom beyond life's wisdom."

Sigh. Different strokes. People enjoy different things in life which is completely normal. The idea that someone could enjoy knitting for instance blows my mind and I think I would go insane doing something so repetitive.

"How does one become an alcoholic?"

The correct answer to this question is...you go to meetings. If you don't attend meetings you're just a drunk not an alcoholic.

Count your blessings. I didn't really really understand what an alcoholic was until I met this old guy on a (fairly shitty) job I had in college. First thing he told me about himself was that he was an alcoholic. I couldn't think of what to say so I asked him the last time he had a drink and he said '1957'. It was what he said next that I remember vividly: "But I ... think about it, all the time". Imagine living like that.
