switching to iphone

I have always used android but thinking about switching. The main reason is this facetime thing. The grandkids and parents have iphones and it would be nice to see them when we talk. Also with apple winning the lawsuit over Samsung, androids will be hard to buy.
Any other good reasons to switch?

Who told you that Android will be hard to find due to the Samsung lawsuit? Android is an operating system used by many phone manufacturers, the Samsung lawsuit was specifically about their phones resembling Apple products.

iphone is WAY less buggy. The iphone OS is made for that specific phone unlike androids where its for tons of different makes and specs. The build quality is way better then most any android phone, iphones have a very solid feel to them. They also hold there value better then any other phone. I sold my iphone 4s recently on feebay for $370, not bad!

It took me a while to commit to an iphone but its worth it. I use a lot of data to browse internet and stream Pandora. Both are super fast comparing to my old htc inspire.

I have an iphone and like it but truth be told, graymoose, I very rarely use FaceTime. It's a clever program and works just fine, but the novelty factor wears off quicker than you might think.

That said, iPhones are slick and work well. Not a huge fan of iTunes (which you'll use to put content on your phone) but it's serviceable.

If everyone else who you regularly communicate with has iPhones then it makes more sense. The Messenger thing eliminates having to pay for a texting plan and we use that a ton. I don't use Facetime a lot either but do now and then to talk to the kids and it's nice to have when you want it. You rarely have to use iTunes these days since they now can synch over wireless and updates come over the air.

I have an iPhone. I like the simplicity of it, where everything 'works'.
We use Android phones for work (Sprint-HTC EVO) and it's not bad, but it seems not as put together. I do like the larger screen of the HTC, but the iPhone's OS and integration work a lot better.

We also have iPads.

I got the iPhone because I wanted a smart phone but wasn't going to be a "power user." It's annoying that Flash doesn't work on the iPhone, but it does everything I need it for and has an easy learning curve.

I have never heard so much stupidity in one single post. There was literally nothing logical or factual in that.

That's how everyone feels when you grace us with your presence. How arrogant and ignorant do you have to be to tell someone that there's nothing factual about them wanting to use FaceTime with their family?

Do you stop new mothers on the street and say, "That's not your baby. I know babies and that's not your baby"?

Actually, Samsung just won an International Trade Commission rulling against Apple that banned the iPhone 4 and the iPad 2. But the good ol' Obama adminsitration stepped in to help out the corporate doners and overruled the ban. It always helps to buy off friends in high places. Samsung needs to learn that the US is really just a more modern Mexico. You need to line the right pockets to get things done.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2384442/Apple-ban-Obama-administration-scraps-trade-commission-ban-Apple-imports-tech-giant-violated-Samsungs-patents.html

As far as the iPhone goes, it's fine. I don't think there's much difference between the two platforms anymore. Android "just works" too, so that's a bogus argument. However, you have to be much more selective about your hardware with Android. Samsung makes good products and seems to support their hardware long after the sale. HTC, IMHO doesn't do a great job on supporting their hardware. The other manufactuers are kind of a crap shoot.

For video chatting, Skype and Tango are both cross-platform, so no need to switch phones for that. Tango also has a desktop app for windows.

Good morning Gerry, thank you for your input. Can you tell us in 750 words or less what sort of phone you use and why? Can you compare and contrast it to the iPhone?

If you're switching carriers... Verizon has great service but terrible customer support despite all the jokes about AT&T, I've never had a single problem with them. My dropped call rate is about 1%.

A second vote for AT&T. Decent coverage and they now make it pretty easy to unlock the iphone you bought with them, once you're nearly out of contract.

This in contrast to two years ago when the first 2 levels of folks I talked to vehemently denied that iphones are locked to carriers, or can be 'unlocked', or that they had any idea what I was asking about. Third level of supervisors just checked to see if I was out of contract, and unlocked it.

Off topic, but once you have an unlocked iphone, I'd suggest getting a SIM for it from Consumer Cellular. They use At&t's towers so the coverage is the same, but I'm paying less than half of what I did, and I have no running contract. One small difference they didn't tell me about up front: you cannot send pictures as SMS, which I rarely do anyway as I prefer to email selfies of my junk.

I'd stay away from AT&T if I were you. For months I was having problems where the signal would get crossed with other calls and the line would get disrupted with other people talking and very loud noises. Finally one night I got fed up when I was on the phone with my wife and someone was listening to our call and interjecting it with fart noises and crude sexual language, my wife was pissed! Replaced the SIM card and I still kept getting harrassed by people who thought i hacked into their phone system, one guy even threatening to kick my ass.

I mainly use my phone for e-mails and texting with customers. Also surf the web alot. How is AT&T with things like that?

I'm not hugely impressed by their 3g speeds but the coverage is okay. Step anywhere near a building and you'll be lucky to get much of anything but I hear Verizon is worse.

They don't have unlimited data anymore. I signed up when they did and got grandfathered in. Depending on how much and what you do on the web, the data plans might be the deciding factor for you.

Also, as I mentioned, Flash isn't supported on the iPhone so it's a different sort of web browsing experience. It's my understanding that the windows and android phones are closer to a PC web feel.

graymoose,

Have you checked out prepaid iPhones? Virgin Mobile has the iPhone 5, 4S, and 4 for sale. You have to pay full price for the phone upfront, but the monthly plans are dirt cheap.

Unlimited data and 300 minutes of talk for $35 a month. Unlimited everything for $55.

You need to get straight talk through walmart

Check it out, they have iphones and use the same Att towers for 40 bucks a month

>Have you checked out prepaid iPhones? Virgin Mobile has the iPhone 5, 4S, and 4 for sale.

The downside is that Virgin Mobile here is wholly owned by Sprint, with their legendary poor service. Also, they flat out refuse to ever unlock it for you, even though it's your fucking phone, free and clear. You might be able to unlock it yourself on the sly but this kinda thing is always less preferable than a real unlock, which goes through apple and is forever and ever. If you are ever headed to another country and want to use your iphone there (which is easy in every country in the world except this one), an unlocked iphone is gold. Oh, and they absolutely will not let you use your own phone with their service, unlike Consumer Cellular.

>You need to get straight talk through walmart

Straight talk is supposed to be okay but their 'unlimited data' plans are not what they appear to be. They have a famously cryptic service agreement which, if I recall, essentially says that they can drop you from their service for no reason at all whenever they feel like it. In practice, they seem to only do this only to folks who really use tons of data and not very often, but they apparently refuse to fess up to anything. They do, however, admit to strangling your data speed if you go over some limit during the month (although I think the limit is reasonably decent). If you don't live off your iphone you should be fine.

There are literally dozens of various applications that are cross platform that can perform the same actions better with more features. Including Skype. Apple has a stupid application it keeps exclusive to its operating system. That should be even more reason not to use Apple products not force you to switch to an Apple product.

I would be more than happy to. I use a Samsung Galaxy S3 rooted loaded with the latest version of Liquid Smooth 2.9 running modified Vanilla Android 4.3.

My phone is very fast, has triple the features of the average Android phone yet alone ICrap and meets my needs. It's also a lot sexier of an operating system and a mans smart phone. Not a little puppy dog elementary school application made to look like an operating system.

What can I say without getting technical. Here is what I will conclude with. Learn to use Android people, it's easier than you think. It is a never ending mobile adventure. Everything is free and everything is freedom. Don't confine yourself to Apple institutionalization.

Quick list:

Overclock/ undervolt
variations of operating system ports
More selection of phones and tablets
The future belongs to Android
Wireless hotspot/ mobile wifi network
Most devices very easy to unlock for any sim/ unlocked my s3 myself by a generic input of digits.
I even flashed a t mobile radio to an at&t version s2 once to pick up a different conflicting band of 4g once, try that with a fucking iphone
expectations of Android users are free content, all apps have free versions
Paid apps are accessible free too
Flash compatible
SD card capable
Phone state back ups can be made in case of need to revert, like windows restore.
Power widgets, status bar, on screen widgets, screen shots.

A lot of that recently stolen technology by Apple of Android innovation.

I can go on and on and on. If I was forced to use an Iphone I would become suicidal. Not for me.

And then there's this: Android Obliterates Smartphone Market

http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2013/08/07/android-continues-to-obliterate-smartphone-market-blackberry-hits-new-lows/

Apple's market share: 13.2 % and falling
Android's market share: 79.3 % and rising.

The remaining scraps are picked up by Windows phone, Nokia and Blackberry.

Just like I was the earliest of the early Android adopters. Android itself has gotten too big and evil for its britches. I will be getting into Firefox Open Source based on HTML5 for phones. Get one for 80 bucks.

Bought this yesterday for 250, pretty stoked.

Apple sells as many smartphones as Samsung, HTC, and Motorola combined. Samsung s3 sucks, battery barely lasts 12 hours.

My battery lasts all day. But if it didn't I could have a spare on a wall charger to swap out in less then 10 seconds fully charged. Can you do that? Plug it up bitch.

I remember reading a few months back about concerns that ZTE and Huawei were fronts for the Chineses goverment's intelligence arm and that their phones were not trusted/allowed by US security services.

But since we're all being spied on anyway, what's the harm of letting the Chinese in on your phone calls too?
