Can a state breakaway from the U.S?

Can a state say, "ok we are done, we are declaring independence from the union and we are forming our own country"? Is there something in the constitution that can stop them from doing it? For example, if the people of California decide to break away from the rest of the country can they hold a referendum and do it that way? If everyone votes for it and agree.
