I am going with a Middle Eastern connection, but not the Saudi in custody. My guess is it is possible that the Saudi just happened to be there and ran (like any smart person should have) and was grabbed.

I am thinking Middle Eastern because of a global knowledge of the Boston Marathon, one of the most famous races worldwide.

I was leaning towards some type of anti-tax thing because of the date, but the target would be wrong and it wouldn't "unite" Americans against the Taxman. A more likely target would be an IRS or federal building.


I am leaning against a white supremacist angle also because of the target. B'nai B'rith or a MLK parade would be a sure thing. There are a lot of racists in Boston, but I think this would have to be a really deranged lone wolf, as this "would even make the white supremacists look bad". And who would the target be? The Kenyan and Ethiopians in the race?

Just speculating... Bloomberg was quick to blame Tea Party guys for the Times Square bombing that failed. Authorities in TX and the media were quick to blame the Aryan Brotherhood for the prosecutor slayings that now seem to be connected to a fired sheriffs deputy.. And most of us blamed Muslims for OKC when that first happened.

The Boston area has a LOT of Islamo-terrorists. I lived there for a long time; about 2 years ago they arrested some al-Quaeda guys a couple doors down from where I lived. This is the first time since 9/11 that they have attacked Boston, though. Not sure how connected or effective the terrorist networks are anymore, but this was surely the work of a believer. Could have been imported or home-grown.

What amazes me is that they still have any non-bomb-proof trashcans in the city. I thought they were all hardened back when. However, you don't need a trashcan for bombing anyway. Just about everyone in the city is carrying a backpack or duffel bag or something, all the time.

Will be interesting to see how that plays out with public transportation. Looking forward to bag searches on the bus, subway, commuter rail, and Amtrack.

I think I'll just be renting cars from now on, even if it takes 45 minutes to find a garage that's not full...
