Yeah, under Bush all we did was gutt what was left of the Fourth and Fifth Amendments, and by ignoring the Geneva Convention on treatment of PoWs and by invading Iraq we lost most of the international sympathy from 9/11. We also went from a relatively solvent government with a tax system that could reasonably be expected to cover its expendatures to a heavily indebted government with a tax system unlikely to cover expenditures, the economy went into the toilet and welfare roles exploded. Oh and even under Bush we headed down the road towards communism (as you call it). You forget section 8 sharon that it was Bush who got the prescription drug benefit added to Medicare. Must be tough for you conservatives knowing that when you are talking about returning to the "Good Old Days", you mean when Clinton was president.

Bush went BIG for fiscal stimulus well in excess of nominal GDP growth. It becomes hard for the government to give up its role of moderating the economy as any meaningful retraction of stimulus will result in a sharp recession. Even if it's short and probably the right thing to do, there will be political price to pay (just ask Bush Sr.).
