NRA: Membership Has Grown by 250,000 in One Month
A quarter of a million people have signed up for new NRA memberships ahead of the White House Task Force's findings

A day before President Barack Obama is scheduled to release Vice President Joe Biden's recommendations to curb gun violence in the United States, the National Rifle Association told U.S. News and World Report that they have seen membership grow by 250,000 in the month since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

Politico reported membership had grown by more than 100,000 five days ago. The NRA says that when Politico reported the story, membership was close to 200,000, but the number has drastically grown in just five days. The association now has over 4.25 million members, but the NRA says that number is always fluctuating as memberships expire and new members join.
"I would say that every time President Obama opens his mouth and Sen. [Dianne] Feinstein opens her mouth and they talk about gun bans and restricting the rights of law abiding Americans, people pay attention to that and sign up," says Andrew Arulanandam, the NRA's public affairs director.
The growing rate of membership comes as Obama is slated to announce both legislative proposals and executive orders related to Biden's findings on how to stop the spread of gun violence. The vice president has said that his committee is mulling over stringent restrictions on high-capacity magazines, a national gun sale database and closing the gun show loophole, which allows unlicensed gun dealers to sell firearms to customers without background checks at gun shows.

Biden sat down with the NRA last week, in what the association described as a disappointing meeting.
"We were disappointed with how little this meeting had to do with keeping our children safe and how much it had to do with an agenda to attack the Second Amendment," the NRA said in a released statement Thursday. "While claiming that no policy proposals would be 'prejudged,' this task force spent most of its time on proposed restrictions on lawful firearms owners—honest, taxpaying, hardworking Americans."

New members can join the NRA with a one-year membership for $35, a two-year membership for $60, or become life members for $1,000. Members can also pay $25 up front, then be placed on a payment schedule until their lifetime dues are completely paid. I support 2A, but Wayne LaPierre is a moron. He is to blame if Obama "wins". New Yorkers already lost.
The entire nation was waiting for the NRA to respond after the shooting. So after delaying, LaPierre comes out and blames fucking video games and movies. He doesn't do the smart thing, and try to shift the debate to mental health care in this country, the real "root cause" of these events. He offers another scapegoat that is about as dumb as thinking 10 round magazines will prevent another Newtown.
After that disaster of a showing, where they failed to offer a cogent argument people in the middle could get behind, the battle was already over. The anti-gunners were free to run over the NRA like they are doing now and Obama seems poised to do tomorrow. Last week the NRA finally rolled out a new face to try and do damage control, but it is too late. Meanwhile the mainstream media offers Ted Nugent and Alex Jones as the face of 2A. Thanks NRA.
For people you would think would be so well versed in PR and trying to shape a national discussion, they fell flat on their faces when they were confronted with their gravest challenge. Then you can run for NRA Board of Directors and move to have him replaced.
Personally, I think he's doing fine so far. The reason they didn't issue
a press release sooner is because they were waiting "until all the facts are in"
and it turned out to be a smart move. Look at all the lies and falsehoods
that were floating around in the press immediately after the shootings.
BTW, the new laws in New York are still going to be challenged in court.

Yeah, they also have a huge discount on membership last month. Also the NRA counts renewals as new members. They cook the numbers like crazy, in fact that is pretty much their full time job now. Real owners dropped the NRA long ago after they became a lobbying firm for the gun industry, I joined Gun Owners of America instead.

I can't wait for Obama to announce what he is going to do at noon today. You gun idiots are going to go nuts and that is sure fun to watch. I suspect he will expand background checks, have more control on semi-automatic hand guns and assault weapons and limit mags to around 7 rounds.
