Forever alone on a Saturday night is sadder, because people typically get together with their friends or go out someplace to socialize, or spend time with the people who love and care about them.

Being forever alone means that there is absolutely no one who cares about you. You have no one to spend time with, to have a friendly chat with and enjoy some good times with. You could die and no one would notice or even care very much, because you are utterly, completely and totally alone.

The truth is that it becomes much harder to make new friends as you get older. Most people you're going to meet already have a circle of friends, the core of which they accumulated through high school, college, and less frequently military service. They have enough friends, thank you very much, and don't need your lame ass in that circle.

You can occasionally make friends through work, but if only if you can do something for that person that they're not already getting from their existing circle of friends, or more often if being your friend is advantageous to their career. When you leave that job, you're also usually going to leave any friends you've made there behind, especially if you leave under less-than-perfect circumstances (you're fired, laid off, or quit).

Having friends is overrated. It's much more satisfying to sign onto the internet and find a forum such as Fairfax Underground where you can insult, annoy, harass and occasionally stalk complete strangers.
