Would you rather hire someone....

2 profiles:

TJ grad, top 20 percent of class, perfect SAT 2400 without any prepping (just took it cold), Intel or Siemens winner, Harvard grad (top half of class). Not interested in ECs at all.

TJ grad, valedictorian, 2200 SAT score with lots of prep, involved in tons of
ECs (many not in the academic realm), Harvard grad (valedictorian).

I'd probably throw their resume in the trash if they bothered to include their high school and SAT score.

I also wouldn't care if they went to Harvard. I want someone with a clue about the job.

So you're telling me you would rather hire a UVA, VT, GMU, or JMU grad over a
Harvard one? Are you on drugs?

High School diploma vs a college grad? I'll take the college grad. Older, wiser, been out in the world (usually). But, kids these day, you never know. They're all narcissistic, pretentious, and think they don't have to work their way up.

I'd rather hire someone with two years of experience doing the job I'm hiring him to do, someone who has the proper credentials already in place, someone who has good people skills, a good work ethic, who is a team player and who is pleasant to be around. Just because you went to TJ or Harvard does not mean you have those things. Of course it doesn't mean you don't have them either.

SATs irrelevant. I'm not hiring you to take standardized tests
Valedictorian irrelevant but GPA and class rank would be
Prizes/Awards only relevant if I knew what they were
Extracurricular activities depending on what they are

The only thing relevant is the college education. You already assume they were in the top tier of their high school by the university. The other relevant factor you left out is the major, the type of specialized studies they took, any work or internship they pursued while in college, any university research to which they may have contributed, and so on.

good to know we have lib retards on here. they would rather hire
a bum with an iq of 80 over a MIT grad with perfect SAT scores.

Harvard Law > UVA Law, GMU Law

Harvard Engineering > VT Engineering, GMU Engineering

Harvard Computer Science > VT Computer Science, GMU Computer Science

Harvard Business School > EVERY BUSINESS SCHOOL IN ENTIRE STATE OF VA

Harvard Economics > UVA Economics, GMU Economics

Harvard English > IS A JOKE? UVA only VA school to produce any writer of merit

The Nobel Prize is probably the most sought after award in academics and
it's the litmus test for peer global validation.

Harvard Nobel Prize winners: 78
UVA Nobel Prize winners: 0
Virginia Tech Nobel Prize winners: 0
George Mason Nobel Prize winners: 2
James Madison Nobel Prize winners: 0

These idiots would rather hire a Everest college grad than someone at CalTech.

Depends on the position. That is the problem with these discussions. Graduating from Harvard business at the top of your class does not mean that you would be a good receptionist. While a Cal Tech grad might be the most qualified candidate for an IT position, it might be possible to get someone with lesser credentials who would do an equally good job for much less $$$.

Why would an ace from Harvard Business School apply for a receptionist
job? There's a reason why Google, Microsoft, and Facebook scour Stanford, Harvard, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, CalTech, Berkeley campuses for talent throwing near-six figure starting salaries. Google actually has a point system that rewards extra points for the actual university you went to in their hiring practices.

You never see Google jumping at the chance to hire Everest or Devry graduates.

Most hiring managers would question the logic of anyone getting
their education at fly-by-night places like Devry, Everest, Strayer, etc..considering community colleges offer online and night courses and are
a fraction of the price.

As a former HR manager, any resume that lists Devry, Everest, ITT Tech, Strayer applicant would get shredded immediately. A few chuckles would precede such action. No tech superstars have EVER come out of those places. They are either graduates and dropouts from Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Berkeley, etc..

Google, Facebook, and most Silicon Valley firms have
a specific ideal person in mind when hiring:

1. You are White or Asian
2. Scored perfect 2400 SAT in your sleep
3. Taught yourself coding at the age of 5
4. Can do problems from calculus III, physics, and differential equations
age 16 in your sleep
5. If you were admitted to Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Caltech but got bored
and dropped out
6. You were in the Mathematical Olympiad
7. You already had startups and projects under your belt in your teens
8. Finalist or winner in the Intel STS or Siemens competitions

While you are discussing the relative merit and prestige of these different schools...the real world pretty much doesn't give a shit. This isn't Silicon Valley. This is DC, where you will be hired by a Government contractor to competently (but not ostentatiously) perform the work you are assigned and to schmooze the customer (who you probably despise) to bring in more work. Mavericks and superstars - especially if they are obnoxious, which kind of goes with the territory - are not welcome. Your ability to go along and get along are at least as important as your technical skills.

And the schmoozing and connection building is highest at
Ivy and highly prestigious schools. The alumni network at
Harvard, Yale, Stanford is all-powerful. The last two
Presidents came from Ivies. The two candidates for this election
came from Harvard. Cabinet positions, federal judges, Senate seats get
filled with Ivy grads. The CEO of Lockheed is from an IVY, CEO of Raytheon
is from CalTech.

Name me one Devry or Everest college graduate that heads a major
tech, def cont, business firm.

You're missing the point. It's great to aim high, but 95% of workers in this area and any other are not going to be CEOs or run for public office (despite what they may think in their 20s).

And I'm not talking about Devry or Everest. I'm talking about Mason or JMU equivalents. For the most part, people who go to Ivy Leagues are in whole different social strata and have a different aspirational mindset. Then there's the rest of us. And in this less rarified world, no one cares where you went to school after your first job.

Wrestling this thread back on topic, easy answer: The TJ grad with the 2200 SAT score and lot of ECs.

Of course it depends on the job. If I'm hiring a lawyer and one went to med school and the other to law school, I'd choose the law school grad. Duh!

Otherwise, though, they're both plenty smart. But I know that the second one (with the lower SATs) knows how to study. And I know the second one has a life outside the classroom already.

I don't know, the first seemed to have more innate talent. Getting
a perfect 2400 without prep on the SATs is a mighty feat. The
second candidate is more rounded, but do you need a
jack of all trades or someone who is a whiz? I'd take the
whiz any day.

Would you take a good, very hardworking and able
basketball player who would give you 100% each time or would you draft an unpolished Michael Jordan? The answer is obvious.

You can't teach talent. No matter how many hours of art practice you put in, you
won't be a Leonardo da Vinci.

You can eat, sleep, and dream of basketball, but Lebron would still
school you.

Why that's not PC at all. Remember that the liberal retards
will tell you that with encouragement, Juan the lawnmower guy will
end up rivaling Isaac Newton in math.

No no matter how many hours of practice you put in, you wont be able to master a Cockney accent like Leonardo de Caprio.
