Low Flush Toilets
Posted by: LowFlush ()

Just moved into a home with all new low flush toilets. We used to live in a home with toilets from the 60's. Its like pooping into a bedpan then having the same amount of water in a dentist's spit sink to flush.

My turds actually stick the landing then fall like sequoias onto the side of the above water bowl (today one actually grazed my cheek as it fell). Used to be they were buried at sea straight into the ample pool, now they languish on the shore line with the TP for a couple of flushes leaving a smear on the bowl. Gross.

When I try to do Stealth Pees TM late at night the angle of the bowl is too shallow and it deflects the pee out of the bowl. On the older toilets Im quite skilled at aiming for the steepest part of the bowl so my peeing is quiet (rather than just hosing away into the pool).

These toilets suck...

You can't go wrong with replacing them with the American Standard "Champion" line. I did. They'll suck the shit right out of you.

This is an excellent topic.

Low flush toilets are the Bain Capital of my existence. It takes four flushes at least, almost every time, with one of these toilets. Have a plunger handy. Feeling you about the splashback. Do you bother to wipe it off when that happens or do you just let it be?

It was an EPA idea. Flusing a toilet six times is better than once by their thinking.

Deuce dropping tip for a low flow shitter.
Place a strip of TP on the landing zone before you dump. When you unload, the weight of the deuce will carry the load and paper into the drop zone for easy flushing.
As for splattering pee, you need to establish a whiz spot in your yard. I have a wrap around porch with the left side facing (almost bordering) my shithead neighbors yard. I can stand on the edge of the porch and piss on his bushes.
You can't beat the satisfaction of pissing on your neighbor AND saving water at the same time.

The problem may not be that you have low flush toilets, but rather may be that you have the wrong one. Some are (excuse the expression) crap, but some are fairly good. We put in two Champions when we redid one bathroom and it actually worked better than the old 3 gallon. If you don't like the Chamion style there may are others. You may also be able to find old 3 gallon toilets if you have a friend in the bathroom remodelling business, or don't mind a trip up north.

If you're looking for a solution that doesn't involve replacing a toilet, try holding the handle down for a longer time when you flush. It may allow the bowl to hold just enough additional water to make things better.

The op needs to find a toilet with the biggest flapper/valve as possible. The larger the valve, the more water enters, and creates a bigger suction. The Champion has a valve the size of a softball.

Your face is not supposed to go in a toilet. Didn't they teach you these things?

There seems to be a consensus: buy a better toilet.

I replaced two of ours with one-piece Toto Carlyles. No log jams. No shit stained bowl and nary a back splash.

On a similar vein, I hate the public restrooms with the waterless urinals. Those things are so nasty.

I once clogged up a Champion toilet. They are a good brand however, that fucker could not handle a heavy full evacuation that day.

Women's bathrooms are so gross, what the fuck is it? all of this "hovering" over the bowl and spraying the seat with poop and urine, then just walking away like it's normal.

In San Francisco, low flush toilets have caused a sludge back-up inside the sewer pipes and a rotten egg stench in the air.

Apparently, there isn't enough water to move all the poop of the city's residents to the treatment plan.

So, the city is spending millions of dollars pouring bleach into the pipes.

This is causing anger amongst the environmentalists who are concerned about the affect this might have on the bay.

Liberals are such a pain in the ass.....

What does the toilet say? Is it 1.6 gallons per flush or 1.2?

The newer toilets are 1.2 gallons.

As someone stated earlier, the Champion series by American Standard is one of the best low flow toilets. They utilize a 3" trapway and are semi- pressure assisted.
Kohler makes a line, I think the Cimmaron is part of their line that has a 3" trapway. It is not pressure assist, but regular gravity flush.

Some of the newer toilets have a two part flushing mechanism, one for liquids and one for solids. The older low flush toilets were notorious for being unable to properly flush without flushing numerous times. The toilet manufacturers at the time took regular 3/5 gallon flush toilets and put low flow tanks on them. They did not change the characteristics of the bowl, which led to flushing problems.

The cheaper low flow toilets on the market now still use 2" or maybe 2.5" trapways and most, if not all are gravity flush.

The right one to get has at least a 3" trapway, and there are a few out now with 3.5" trapways, and a pressure assisted flush. Pressure assisted flush models make a somewhat loud "whoosh" noise when you trip the lever. Noisy in the middle of the night, but well worth it in my opinion.

How about simply dropping a deuce in the back yard or in the storm drain?

Op here mine is a Glacier Bay brand toilet. As mentioned it has some pretty serious shortcomings. It was installed within the last 6 months when our house was fully renovated. Sounds like we would have been better off with one of the superior brands. Glacier Bay may not flush crap very well but it certainly flushed our money down the drain...

Here is Consumer Reports take on our crapper "CR's Take

Most dual-flush toilets save little water over capable, single-flush toilets. But this Glacier Bay, sold at Home Depot, is nevertheless worth considering for its liquid-flush savings and bargain price. It's WaterSense-certified, which means lower water bills, and was great at cleaning its front and sides. This model's also a "comfort-height" model, meaning extra ground clearance that makes getting on and off easier. Two caveats: a low water surface, which could promote odors, and weak performance in our drain-line carry test, which makes this not the best model if you've experienced drain-line clogs."

When I was looking at replacing my shitty low flow toilets, I called two contractors I know and said "I want to flush a small child if I have to". Both said Champion and I haven't been disappointed. None of them have ever clogged since I replaced them back around 2008. The only person who has come close is my father in law. I hate it when he comes over because he always drops a big nasty duece. From experience with my previous toliets, you can tell when they're struggling by the sound of the water. I've heard 2, maybe 3 times, the cries for help from my main level toilet. But they are Champions and they take it on the chin and keep fighting!!!

As an aside, I never understood the EPA logic. Sure, them amount of water used in a single flush was less, but once you pulled the level again because it didn't go down the first tim, you immediately surpassed whatever amount of water a regular "high flow" toilet would have used. Hooray for environmental policies!

I concur that low flush toilets tend to not do so well when you've dropped a nice post-chili or post sirloin strip meal. And yes, in the long run a double flush winds up eating up as much water as a single flush from a conventional toilet.

I think where the gov't wants to see water savings is for the time when you take a wizz and flush. 1.6 gallons versus 5 gallons ads up quickly.

Granted you could just go outside and pee behind the garage or in a coffee cup, but that is more likely to be something men do as opposed to women - who universally insist on using the toilet (unless they are very, very drunk and instead on peeing in bed, om your chest, or on the coffee table).

Yeah, generally water conservation is a shitty idea.

As my dad once said "if it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down".

He was almost like a hipster - into Al Gore before Al Gore was into Al Gore.

I've got an idea.

Get an outhouse.

You could sit there and relax with two sheets of recycled toilet paper.
