The most educated areas of the country is liberal, rural areas are conservative. It should not be a surprise that VA is overwhelmingly liberal given the amount of $$ flowing through Federal contracting here in the NOVA areas.

+1. Ask the people in Colorado, New Mexico and Montana. All the California libs either lost their jobs or got sick of paying 60% of their income in taxes. This is why I showed you another map that is proportionate in size to show where the bulk of the population is on how it weighed on the election.

Obama won the popular vote and he won the electoral vote. No matter how you slice the pie, he won. Of course the midwest and all of the rural counties are red, NO ONE LIVES THERE, hence, they are very conservative in views.

No, I didn't miss the point.

Beyond being rather poorly done infographics, they still are aggregated in a way that makes it appear that an entire state/county went "overwhelmingly" for a given candidate versus reflecting degree as in the VA chart that I posted.

They also distort the relative population/sizes by incorporating the weighting for electoral value which makes some areas appear significantly larger than they would be based on population alone.

And neither addressed VA directly in any way per the original post.

He did not win VA "overwhelmingly" by any measure (other than maybe electoral count) as was stated in the post that I responding to.

And, again, these maps reflect results of a single, specific PRESIDENTIAL election, not whether the population is "liberal." A different election/candidate/time may well yield different results (e.g., as in the case of Congressional results versus Presidential results).

That's the direction I'm heading. Coastal SE. Sold my waaaay over-priced house here to a hipster couple who I know are going to just LOVE their new neighbors. All 20 of them and their cars parked all over the yard. lol Bought a nice place on the water for about what you'd pay for a condo here and banked the balance. You can have this over-crowded, third world shit hole. Used to be a nice area but it's gone completely to hell over the last 20 years. That's just going to get worse. Kentucky is not South of Virginia. Look at a map. Kentucky is hardly Southern at all. Its like the Midwest with a slight southern element. Most people there are either hillbillies in the east or just mainly midwestern in the west. Its virtually indistinguishable from Ohio. Louisville is north of Richmond.

Its not just Virginia, its the whole South Atlantic region. I was in Raleigh, NC area last month. Just like NOVA. Pushy, rude people . All spread out . You got to drive 10 miles to get everywhere. Lots of that. Charlotte is the same way. Atlanta Metro is a lot like DC Metro. Nothing remains untouched. There are parts of Virgina and NC that are still nice, but most of it has been turned upside down. Triangle area of NC has lots of people from NY/NJ. You're more likely to hear a NJ accent in that part of NC than anyone from NC. I hate it.If you wanna find "The South" you have to go a lot further west.

Why do people have this miconcetion about all Northerners are well educated? I have been to the North, and I hate to break it to you, but parts of Upstate NY and PA and New England are so backwater, they make the South look like Paris , France. Not every Northerner is a rich Manhattan socialite. How many New Yorkers actually live that way? Less than 1% The rest all live in tenament slums and speak horrible English. Same with Boston, Philly, Pittsburg, etc. Do you honestly think people from Chicago sound nice? They sound atrocious. "Hieee Aheem from Chicaaaaago". Yikes. People. If thats what people think sounds well educated, then call me a taxi.

If you live Virginia, then you're in the South, buddy. And whats with the Northern accents? Do the puprosely talk through the nose? Or do they have somethign stuck in there? Yikes.

no shortage of scary rural folk up North either. Those long cold winters foster a lot of alcohol abuse. Unlike the South however Northerners on the east coast* will generally not pretend to be overly nice when they do not know you. In the South it will be sweetness and polite protocol right up until they lynch you. Two-faced mothers...

I cant stand northern accents. There are some southern accents that can be annoying, but in general, its lighter and easier to handle. Northerners sound awful. My ears perk up when I hear them because they sound so shrill- there's no way not to notice. Do northerners realize how awful they sound? They seem to only think Southerners have a problem. I wish they could hear how bad they sound, though.

Persons with heavy Boston accents sound like idiots for sure. When I went up to school up there I thought they were the stupidest people on earth. 'wicked good' 'bubbla' 'pakie' 'pop' many more I cannot recall. Id say more gutteral than the Southern lilting drawl. I dont care for either other than in the movies...

Please, this topic has come up in at least half a dozen previous threads. Nothing new is being said.

Northern Virginia is still the South- and that's not a bad thing! Why can't people accept it and move on? Its a good thing. NE= rude, unfriendly, loud mouthed people with low class manners. South= friendly, better looking women, etc.

Poor Virginia- a victim of culture doesn't mesh with geography. She sits at the bottom of the North and the Top of the South. Pretty much pummelled in either direction. Two Centuries ago, she might as well have been Alabama. But the invention of the Jet Plane puts Virginia at New York's doorstep. We're not a big country anymore. Lets just learn to deal with the changes.
