Bye bye Boehner?

After tonight's dismal failure, John Boehner should consider resigning as Speaker. It's clear that he does not control a key element of his Conference. He's also not a credible negotiator if he can't deliver votes. The Speaker needs a career Plan B.

The crap from all three (Obama, Senate, House) doesn't deserve to float.

Sadly true. With the moderate wings of both parties being unwilling to work with each other, and with neither party holding a strong majority in its respective house of Congress, Congressional leadership is in a weak position because party extremists can wreck any party-line vote. Ordinarily this would work to the advantage of the president who could put together bipartisan coalitions. However the one thing Congressional Republicans are united on is their dislike of Obama.

Boehner does have one card that he can play. He can stop trying to be the leader of the House Republicans and start being Speaker of the House.

Won't help. Reid's not in much if any better position with his own folks with any of the deals as currently proposed. They've just been more quiet about it other than a few grumbling about not touching SS/Medicare.

At best they may pull together to get some sort of temporary delay in place to buy time but that's not going to make markets very happy.

It's moot - he will "be resigned" by the People who clearly see this an Insane Party problem and remove them come next election.

Do you think those other Republicans who didn't sign onto this bill did it simply for the good of the nation? Uh uh, their constituents have been letting them know what's what and they're correctly fearing for their jobs.

This is not a bipartisan problem though many politically-correctly feebly attempt to portray it as such.

The problem is entirely the Insane and Imploding Party of No (and Hatred)'s.

And, as with the presidential election, The People know it.

Then why didn't they vote them out in November?

This is one of the big problems with the tea party. They don't actually understand how our political system works.

We don't vote in a whole new legislature every four years, only the president.

Geez.

The problem with the nation as whole is most people don't understand how the politcal system works, let alone the basic principals of its foundation.

We vote for the house of representatives every two years -- 2010, 2012, 2014...

@8 more years: See the link below. The article makes a related point. Safe districting has left party leaders with very little influence, so the problem may well be structural. If Boehner returns, it's because nobody wants his job.

Says The Plain Dealer's Thomas Suddes: "Members of Congress elected from politically rigged districts worry only about primary election challenges from within their own parties. That means they try to be more Catholic than the pope, so to speak, as to political dogma. The average Republican member of Congress isn't going to let anyone out-conservative him or her."

You can add a layer to Google Earth to view congressional districts overlayed on the map. Dranesville is ridiculously contorted. It used to be easier to view in Google Earth, now they use a faint red line. I wonder if that is on purpose, to obfuscate the fact that congressional districts can sometimes twist around each other.

Dranesville used to be really skinny along the potomac, avoidling Tysons, Reston, Herndon, and then it ran out toward Middleburg. It was obvious they were including the wealthier neighborhoods and avoiding anywhere there were apartments or condos.

You and the article author are right. That is why the two rapey candidates won, and why a few congressmen who went against leadership were challenged and lost in primaries. There were even a few who were told, outright, vote this way on this bill, or we'll find someone to run against you in the next primary.

There once was a furor over redistricting, back in the early 2000's, in texas if I recall, but that seems to be another area where Americans have had their minds numbed and our attention redirected.
