These are the accounts of the Second American Civil War, also known as the Wars of Reunification and the American Warring States Period.
After the breakup, many wondered which states would come out in control of the power void created by the dissolution of the United States. There were many with little chance against several of the larger more powerful states. The states in possession of a large population, predisposition for military (i.e.) military bases, and a population open to the idea of warfare fared the best. In the long term, we would look to states with self-sufficiency and long term military capabilities.
Here are the states that held the greatest strategic value from day one. They have the ability to be self-sufficient, economic strength, military strength, the will to fight, and the population to support a powerful war machine.
California
Texas
New York
Others that have many of the qualities that gave them an advantage are also listed.
Washington
Colorado
Illinois
Virginia
Florida
Georgia

Texas... they have rednecks with guns, oil, and key cities. Not to mention they have mexico and the ocean to their south, meaning they can have a navy and good mexican food. It would be neck and neck between Alaska and Texas, but Texas would pull it off by being aggressive and making moves first.

My vote is California, they have all that and more. CA is lacking in the gun department, but they have a great economy and manufacturing base.

New York...just edging out Texas. TX has the man advantage at +6M but this notion of the Texas outdoorsman is a historical farce. Houston is a tough town but, it's where people from Bronx go for vacation.

The first thing they'd do is kill all utilities in order to get everyone to go home and look after what is theirs.

If the Federal gov't ceased to exist, and all states were warring....
Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas would fall to the Narco-cartels in Northern Mexico.
Cuba would establish a hegemony in the Caribbean and annex Florida.

The states with the ICBMs would win. North/South Dakota, Montana, Kansas could just sit back and call it a day.

Although having ICBMs is not the same as being in control of them; there would be a window of time before they figure out how to use them and target them, and they would need experienced people to operate and maintain them.

The nuclear weapons would be useless... They can't be armed by just anybody.

Given that the launch control sites are designed to function independently and they have manpower there already to maintain and operate them, I think they're good to go.

I think those chairs are left-overs from an earlier time. One of my neighbors was one of the guys in the hole. He said with the more accurate targeting systems in the more modern missles, if it ever came down to it, his plan after letting all of his go was to take the ride up and just watch the fireworks. Based on what he knew was coming at him he was pretty much done anyway. Might as well enjoy the show instead of being buried alive at best.
