We Need To Ban ONIONS
Posted by: Al Jarreau ()

Thanks to the onions we are not allowed to eat anything at the Thanksgiving table. I am not sure what the the other garlic-eaters were eating, but I don't mind the smell. I don't mind and I think America would will better off if we never had onions again.

Am I the only one who doesn't like red onions?

Almost all onions taste alike, but for some reason I really get turned off by those red skinned onions. They gross me out, especially when they are raw on sandwiches.

Does anyone else like onions but have a problem with the red ones?

Stop watching fox news. The onions are not the problem. The real problem is that garlic doesn't want onions to have any power so the garlic can have all the butter and bread to itself.

Not really. Red onions are just a milder version of white onions. They wouldn't be my first choice to sauté, but they very good raw. Why do you find them gross?

I use onions all the time when cooking, but it is absolutely brutal cutting them up (copious tears). If anyone has any tips on dealing with the assault on the eyes during cutting, it would be appreciated.

Thr red onions are much stronger and "bitter" for lack of a better term. I like all onions and leeks, but the red onions are best when sauteed and softened.

I haven't gotten tears from cutting onions in years, but I did food prep at an italian restaurant during High School and maybe I built up a tolerance.

However, the trick they used, at least for white onions, was to cup the top and bottom of the onion off, then soak in ice cold water for about 10 or 15 minutes.

They used to keep a 5 gallon food grade bucket with water and ice near the deli slicer, and just dropped them in there before putting them on the slicer.

After your comment, I did some informal research online. Apparently, some people find red onions really astringent. I guess it's like people who find artificial sweeteners repulsive (they taste fine to me, but my husband gags on them).

And thanks for the tip to soak in ice water.

Too much effort. Just hold a piece of bread in your mouth while you're cutting. Easy as breakfast.

Weird because I don't even think they taste different, I just have some adverse psychological reaction when I see them on food. I could get 2 identical Italian subs, one with regular onions, one with red, and I would not want to eat the one with red onions. I got hot dogs from Nathan's a few weeks ago and was actually disappointed when I saw they used red onions on them, I scraped them all off.

Can't explain why, I guess maybe I am the only person who has this strange aversion to red onions.

If only the salad bars would stop putting purple cabbage in with the lettuce container. If I want purple cabbage in my salad I will put purple cabbage in my salad.

Red onions taste sweeter than regular onions to me. They are delicious on sandwiches and salads.

Found out 3 months ago I was allergic to onions. I had an alergy test done and the onion sample brought up a big hive on my forarm. I was told to not eat anything with onions or onion powder in it. When you go to the store, everything has onion or onion powder in it..... I hated onions as a kid, but I had been eating them somewhat as an adult. I like red onions on subs and burgers. Not a fan of grilled onions though.

How can you have any salad if we don't have onions?

It would be a good idea to avoid rubbing onions on any open sores on your skin.

WOW! This could be me posting! I feel exactly the same way (& I thought I was alone). Frankly, I really wouldn't mind if this was simply just an additional option, but, more & more, everywhere I go, fast food places, diners, delis, pizzerias, etc. keep switching to ONLY red onions & I can't stand them!! They're not even red, anyway! They're purple! I absolutely LOVE regular onions (white, yellow, brown). I don't even mind green onions, but I prefer the regular ones. There seems to be this relentless obsession with the red/purple ones & I think it really sucks. Nice to know I'm not the only one who feels this way.
