Poll: If government careens off fiscal cliff, GOP to shoulder blame
Date: November 13, 2012 05:01PM

If the U.S. government ends up careening off the "fiscal cliff," Republicans in Congress stand to shoulder most of the blame, according to a new poll released Tuesday.

It's a PEW Research Center poll, not an NBC poll.

It would be a good thing. Get the damn thing over with instead of going thru many iterations of austerity like Europe. If they only cut $ 1 trillion, they will be back at it again in another year or two.

Spoken like an idiot. You need cuts, but gradual cuts with gradual increases in revenue. It is called balancing the budget.

Steep cuts will destroy the economy. Like it or not, government does create jobs (even Karl Rove's PAC admitted that in support of George Allen and Mitt Romney) and those government created jobs support other jobs. Cut the contractors around here and watch how many small businesses fail.

I'm a Republican but don't bleed red. Oh wait, maybe I do bleed red...oh never mind.

Anyway, I would put the blame squarely on Congress.

Wow!

We get to vote on who's fault it will be?

In honor of MHK's way of bringing up irrelevant idiotic polls when there will be a factual trail to follow, I vote MHK.

But hey...don't let a good poll go unpunished.

I try not to for your benefit.

You wouldn't know intelligent if it jumped on your face and wiggled.

Now pick up the towel you left on the bathroom floor this morning, feed the dog and get back to your homework.

We blame both parties for being assholes and trying to get more money from lobbyist while the rest of America goes down the tubes.

Not really. Folks blame the GOP-tards about 2:1 (BTW, Congress = GOP-tards).

"Fifty-three percent of Americans said Republicans in Congress would be more to blame in that instance, according to a Pew Research Center poll conducted in the days following the election. Twenty-nine percent said that Obama would be more to blame, while 10 percent said both the president and Republicans would share blame."

The problem is that people see austerity has to keep getting addressed in coming years and no one will hire for the long run. The banks will cram down spending cuts and tax increases if the deficit isn't sufficiently addressed now. Have you not learned a lesson from Europe?

"fiscal cliff" expiration of the 2010 Obama tax cuts. No big deal, the President is proposing significantly higher tax increases right now. A reduction in spending that really isn't that big a percentage of the overall budget. The House needs to pass a bill authorizing an increase in defense spending and send it to the Senate. Taxes go up for everyone and the Democrats decide whether to gut defense.

Europe does not teach a lesson for the United States because the problems in Greece, Italy and Spain are caused by the fact that they cannot print more money, and have to depend on commercial banks to cover their debts.

Not that I think printing more money is a great thing, but it is why the problems in Europe have no direct analogy to the United States.

The US cannot default unless congress chooses to default. The debt needs to be paid down, but until deficits are eliminated, playing games with the debt ceiling for political showmanship is destructive.

If you want something that is comparable to Europe, it is individual states with Balanced Budget Amendments and an inability to print money.
