Doubtful.

More likely to do with timing following the election.

Rebel training bases around Benghazi. The european press was all over it. The cover story was the training and support was given by US regional allies.

Gen. Petraeus should exercise more self control, he was in a position power and that is not acceptable behavior. Resigning was the right thing to do.

This is how I can tell you must be very young or at least you haven't been interested in politics long enough to realize how the political cycle works.

Resignations always come after the end of the first term.

In fact, the Obama administration has been remarkably stable compared to most presidents in modern times. Only seven members of his cabinet have resigned to this point.

After Bush's first term, he pretty much completely reshuffled his cabinet --
Altogether, twelve of the fifteen cabinet-level department heads resigned and were replaced.

Blah blah blah benghazi blah blah obama sucks.

I'm not interested in crazy right-wing jabs at Obama.

It just seems weird that he is resigning over an extra-marital affair that, to my knowledge, wasn't even public knowledge.

Perhaps there are conspiracy theories behind this, but I prefer to be cynical about things without going into crazy ideas. Seems odd that he would come forward with an affair all on his own.

Maybe he is responsible for benghazi/syria/whatever, and chose to deflect attention by claiming something scurrilous?

News across the wire... FBI investigating a Paula Broadwell who was Gen. Petraeus' biographer. She might have had access to his classified email...

Yep. This is pretty big.

To think there was talk a few years ago that he might run for president as a Republican in 2012.

This is a pretty hard fall.

Patent nonsense. That's a sum total of what, one resignation since the election. Changes at this level of the administration are common. People who make it to this level are constantly being pulled by the temptation of power in political office, so they quit to run for one, or a lucrative position in industry. Most have worked solely in public service positions, like Petraeus, never making more than a low six figure income. They can cash in on their resumes for ten years, and retire rich.

In any event, Mr. Patraeus should be commended for holding off until after the election, to avoid giving fodder to you and your kind. Don't worry, the Acting Director can still testify, and if Patraeus committed malefesance, he'll still be in hot water, as will the target of your acrimony.

People given to conspiracy theories should have Occam's razor taken to them.

That's what makes the affair part strange. He could easily just say "Now is as good a time as any for me to step down and pursue other goals"

It's the affair that I can't get my head around. No conspiracy theory, but this didn't appear to be a public knowledge thing. Why not resign for "other" reasons?

Apparently came out in an FBI investigation and the press got wind of it so the story was going to come out.

He had an affair with his biographer Paula Broadwell (pictured above)... Ironic that the name of the biography is "All In".

An interview with her from earlier this year...

She's beautiful, has an impeccable pedigree, but she kind of comes across as a valley girl and an opportunist. I'll never understand why men throw away their careers and reputation for this sort of thing. And yes, I've seen his wife.

Its the curse of being a man sometimes. One of my favorite quotes was from Woody Allen when asked how he could do the unspeakable -- fool around with (and eventually marry) Mia Farrow's daughter Soon-Yi. He said, "The heart wants what it wants."

This was probably based on Pascal's "Le coeur a ses raisons que la raison ne connais pas" (The heart has its reasons that reason does not know). However, I'm not sure the heart is the operative organ here.

IMHO, he "resigned" because they found out he was heading a coup attempt that would have taken place if Obama was elected but was found out by the FBI weeks ago - they held off til after the election for the obvious reasons. The problem with an attempted coup - even if found out - is it would totally destroy the world markets not to mention devastate the US in many different ways.

So The Government went the "Rommel Route" and allowed him to resign rather than prosecute him for treason to cover everything up in a neat little "extramarital affair" facade.

About 5 minutes ago there was the obvious low growl of a military jet zooming somewhere, BTW - perhaps there are elements still interested int hat coup.

There've been a LOT of military jets flying around lately - not just the ones escorting prayer-enhanced commercial flights.

Hahaha yes of course this is Obamas fault. I mean obama was following the general around all day and making sure Patraeus didnt bang any strange, but then he said, fuck it, do that bia

You are a moron

Gen Petraeus by the way was thought to be a possible republican candidate for congress or even a presidential run for 2016. He is very much a republican, Obamas appointment of him to the CIA was heralded by both sides of the aisle.

The problem is that the guy was a Republican with impeccable credentials, yet he was the head of the CIA which pretty much had responsibility for whatever was going on in Benghazi.

If you watch Fox News, they don't even know how to report this story. This has happened too soon. All of the writers are still trying to find excuses as to why Mitt Romney and a couple billion dollars couldn't beat such a loser president.

It is a humorous look behind the curtain that separates us little people from the machinations of power.

I wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing ends up fizzling out before too many details emerge. That would be a master stroke for a former combat theater commander and CIA director.

Notice how it was announced at 3pm on a Friday, before a 3 day weekend? and before Veteran's day, no less? Whatever news reporting that happens over the weekend will be stories about soldiers and national cemetery, etc. Come Tuesday morning, something else will emerge to distract the people once again.

Hearings start next week about Petraeus' extra-marital affair?

Oh good lord, you're a fucking one-track record. I wasn't talking about Benghazi you fucking moron. I was talking about Petraeus' affair.

You know, the subject of this thread? "Re: Petraeus resigns due to extramarital affair?" <-- does that say Benghazi anywhere?

His wife was cute at one time, but sure let herself go.

That biographer was attractive in a manly sort of way. Might be indicative of latent homosexual tendencies if you find her attractive.

Doesn't matter whether it says it or not, there's an obvious link given that he was directly involved and was scheduled to testify. He'll continue to be in the news as a result. And that will expand to include when this affair came to light, whether it had any effect on his performance, who knew and when, whether he'll be called to testify even though he's left, and on and on. If you think this is just going to disappear over the long weekend then you're kidding yourself.

Petraeus purposely started the affair last year so that he could get out of testifying at the Benghazi hearings.

It is kind of funny how neophyte some people are, that they think by resigning he won't have to testify.

You're a funny neophyte, yourself, Deputy.

His testimony, if he is called, which I doubt, is now tainted.

Obama, the liar in chief, has labeled him a dishonest man.
