Laptop Battery Recycling?

I've got a couple old laptop batteries that I need to dispose of, but I don't want to just chuck them in the trash because I hear they're horrible for the environment. Likewise, I don't want to take an hour out of my day to drive to some recycling plant just to hand over a couple batteries.

What's the best/safest method for disposing of lithium or nickel-cadmium batteries?

I took mine out to that Fairfax garbage center a few months ago, it's on West Ox near Fair Oaks, and was pretty easy to go there, and efficient at the site. I had a bunch of fluorescent bulbs and other crap too, just save the stuff til you have enough to make the trip.

HHM Facility and Electronics Collection and Recycling Center (ECRC)

Water Pollution Control Plant
530 31st St. S. (WPCP Gate #3)

Rechargeable batteries, as well as lithium, silver-oxide, and mercury batteries, should be dropped off in special collection boxes located at most Arlington County Fire Stations or at the HHM facility.

You can also schedule a pickup: http://www.arlingtonva.us/departments/EnvironmentalServices/SW/Get%20It%20Done%20Online/page83505.aspx
