CarMax....buy your car ripoff

I have a very nice and very low miles 1998 Subaru Outback I decided to sell. I own 4 cars and one has to go so I figured I would go. So off I went to CarMax to see what they offer then decide to sell to them or myself. I have done this before and CarMax has always offered Kelly Blue Book trade-in value, or very close to that number. My son sold them his car a few years ago and they printed out the Kelly page on his car and gave him more because it was a much in demand Subaru WRX.

I arrived and waited 45 minutes for the very nice salesman to call me back in with the info. I did all my research on this car and I know Kelly has a trade-in value of about $5500 and private sale price of $6700. The guy offered me $2000 for this car...with a straight face. I was stunned and asked why. He said they don't use Kelly they never have and they do the estimate and look at what the auctions are getting. I called him a liar because I know they always did base it on Kelly. He called in the guy that did the estimate and he gave me the same bull. I told them what I thought of CarMax and left. I can sell this car all day long for $6000. CarMax is just taking advantage of people that need the money.

Has anyone else used them for an estimate??? Did they use Kelly??

Sorry to hear of your experience and doesn't sound like CarMax treated
you well at, all! For what it's worth... we've only used CarMax a
single time. Ended up selling them our pristine 2004 Acura in 2009
and were paid $100 less than Kelly Blue. We were happy with the deal
and do recall their mention of using Kelly Blue Book valuation along
with some other 'tools' for valuation. Also, recall the estimator
mentioning Consumer Reports magazine ratings for Best Used Cars...

New car dealerships have begun to aggressively compete with CarMax
and tire dealers... Offering, used car/best price buying and beating
any new tire installation... Might be worth checking with one of the
local Subaru dealers for a try. Or, you can certainly try to sell on
your own via autotrader, Wash Post etc... We gave up on that a long
time ago. Too many hassles and time burned.

Wishing you luck with selling or trading your car. Keep us posted and
hope to hear of your soonest success!
