A Washington, D.C., man continues to be held without bond Thursday at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center on charges related to a chase that led Fairfax County and Virginia State Police cruisers — and the county's helicopter — along three major commuter roads at the end of Wednesday's rush hour.

Charles R Lawton, 44, of Washington, D.C., was arrested and charged with driving on a revoked licesnse, habitual offender, and failure to obey law enforcement officer's command to stop.

Fairfax County Police spokesman Officer Don Gotthardt said an officer attempted to stop a 2006 Ford Focus around 6:45 p.m. Wednesday night after it observed the driver commit a traffic violation. But as the officer attempted to complete the traffic stop, the driver sped off, Gotthardt said.

From the area of the incident, near Interstate 66 and Route 28, the driver headed eastbound on Interstate 66 and then north on Interstate 495, with several FCPD and VSP cruisers trailing behind it and the county's helicopter hovering above.

The car continued onto Westbound Route 7 through the Tysons area across Route 123, Gotthardt said, before the chase ended at the new Metro construction site there.

The driver, Lawton, then left his vehicle and was apprehended by state police, Gotthardt said.

There were no injuries or property damage reported, Gotthardt said.

A spokeswoman at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center said Thursday afternoon Lawton remained in custody without bond.
