There was a J.R.'s Steakhouse at the Circle Towers complex near Fairfax Circle, ground level on the side facing US-29 (Lee Highway). In another thread someone said it was owned by the same people who own the J.R.'s Stockyards Inn at Tysons Corner, although I have no confirmation yea or nay on that. As a kid I thought J.R.'s was going to close because "somebody shot the owner." (We weren't allowed to watch Dallas back then but we certainly heard about "Who Shot J.R.?" what with all the hype.)

The Sir Walter Raleigh building on Gatehouse Road is still abandoned. A bit of an eyesore in its highly-dilapidated state.

Anybody remember Lums...not a steak house but a big chain that disappeared.

Picked up a waitress at The Wagon wheel, took dates to Vallees in Springfield, Steak and Ale, JR's at Tysons, etc etc..

Anyone remember the name of the steakhouse at Oakton Shopping Center from long ago that had the little drawbridge you had to cross after you opened the front door? There were armored suits with axes flanking the drawbridge, too.

Remember Phineas in Springfield on the corner of Old Keene Mill Rd & Backlick Rd. Their Prime Rib was outstanding, as was just about everything else on their menu, including the chocolate cheesecake. And their Salad Bar was second to none. It closed as was converted to Charley's Place a year or so later (I worked as a waiter their while attending NOVA.)

I wish I could but I don't remember a lot about the place. As I recall it was dark inside, the food was good, but I was in high school so anything was good. They ran a lot of ads and their tag line was "All the beer, all the salad." They had unlimited of both with your meal. I seem to remember that the building was yellow and really stood out. Otherwise, I don't recall a lot about Emerson's.

Wingnut - I don't recall the Plumb part of the name. It might be but i just don't recall.

Emerson's was definitely a chain. When I worked at 14th and 6 in the early 79's some of us used to go have lunch to an outlet that I think was on K St. Beer for lunch - great! This was when you could get beer at 18.....

Victoria Station . there were two I knew of 1 in Fairfax the other in Alex.
Old train cars a really weird Concept. They did have a good steak and Prime Rib

Steak and Ale, Emersons were good. Emersons had all the Sangria wine like cooler and beer and salad. It was a great place and the one at Tysons had disco dancing i9n the 70's.

Where Angie's is in Twinbrook Plaza on Braddock Road. The place was opened new by a guy who's family owned Bazzanos. He hand cut and grilled a great steak in the late 70's.

Some of the old famous ones I had been inside but never ate there Tom Westons , Black Orchid in Annandale. And I always wanted to go to Tom Sarris in Arlington but never did.

On the cheap side Ponderosa on Rt 237 Rustler on Rt 50 or vice versa.
Wagon Wheel in Annandale and my old favorite, Buckaroo Steak House at Ravensworth early 70's.

They are gone...Outback sucks, was it madcow disease that led to their demise? I guess we have to eat rice and beans, dogs and cats, yardbirds, and raw fish. Dauphines was the last to go, I thought Blackies would stage a comeback, kinda like the Redskins.

Lazar's in Springfield Mall... Entrance 2 first door on the left across from The House of Liu. Not too bad as I recall. They had a Friday steak special for cheap that we late teen redcoat security "officers" took advantage of since it was payday. It became Charlie's Place in the 80s.

Slade's. Also at Springfield Mall, across from the DMV express (kind of) on the lower level. Slade's was good. They had a half-price policy for mall employees that extended to your bar tab until VaABC caught it. I had more fun in that bar then I ever had anywhere else. Everyone was welcome.

Beefsteak Charlie's. There was one on Duke Street maybe halfway between the city and Landmark.(?) All you can eat salad bar, steamed spiced shrimp, and, in Maryland anyway, all you can drink beer, wine, or/and sangria. In Virginia is was like a quarter for a half pitcher of beer or sangria and the same for a small carafe of wine. The one on Duke Street became an Emerson's if I recall correctly.

York Steak House at Springfield Mall was good as well.

Remember the Ranch house? It was next door to southern states on 123. They had a kickass steak and egg breakfast special back in the 80s.

There was also a Ranch House on route 7 in Falls Church. Great place to go for late night chow after the bars.

Emerson's was where my husband and I went to celebrate getting married on this day in 1974 in Alexandria, Virginia. We had great steaks and salads and the famous Emerson's Grog!

Dauphines Steak House -- still open in Springfield!

Mountain Jacks in Falls Church City on Broad Street. Since replaced by another homogenous Applebee's.

Something made me remember there used to be a Bugaboo Creek Steakhouse on Commerce Street in Springfield roughly across the street from where the Bank of America drive-thru lanes are now (maybe slightly down the street to the right; I think it's some kind of southeast Asian restaurant now). Bugaboo Creek was essentially a Canadian-themed version of Outback and I don't recall it lasting very long.

Don't forget about that Bonanza, and Burger Chef had "The Rancher" It was their answer to a fast food steak sandwich circa 1972

Its been an Asian all-you-can-eat place for about 11 years now. There was another Bugaboo in southern MD around Germantown that went under too. I used to pass it going up to Frederick.

The name Caldwell's sounds very familiar but I cannot picture where it was. I seem to recall my brother, when he was a little kid, being unable to pronounce the name and calling it "Cloudwell's" (or something similar).

Not steak houses in particular, but they had great steak Diane and of course filet mignon - Le Couvert in Springfield, next to the tall medical building, and I think run by the same people, La Guingette in Merrifield in the same center as the old body shop that had so much stuff decorating it.

Squire Rockwells, Little River Turnpike, burnt a few years ago.

This is ringing a bell....maybe over where Shakey's, and later Horn & Horn Smorgasbord, used to be? (I don't remember what's there now.)

Yes, It was Caldwell's...featuring mesquite grilled steaks....originally it was Bennington's but changed it's name as the new chain Bennigan's was coming to town, down by Landmark. It was a nice spot w/ good food and GREAT BARTENDERS.

Ranch House was in Fairfax. Gus' Broiler in Springfield. There was a place called The Jolly Ox, but I can't recall where it was ( maybe down off Rte 1?)

I'm confused,
I remember Shakeys as being next to where the First Va. Bank (BB&T) was and now is a CVS, with the bank moving down Backlick next to CVS now. I use to live in the townhouses on the other side of Backlick in the 80's and we would walk to Shakeys.
Now it is Magills Pizza. Mike Magill who owns it use to be part owner of Shakeys when it was there. My sister knew him I think.

What I remember about Caldwells was that it was down in between where Bob's Big Boy (now an antique shop I think) was and Pep Boys. Was Shakeys down there before it was where Magills is now?

DH, I clearly remember that big parking lot in front of Caldwell's. So one of our memories is blurry; I'm betting it's yours, but of course I would :)

Hey Greybeard, I agree about the parking lot. What I remember is that Caldwells did sit back off of Little River Tpike, so there was a large parking lot in front, but it was down next to Pep Boys.
I guess what I am questioning is that Caldwells was Shakeys. I am sure I remember Shakeys being built where Magills is now. It was new construction and I can't forget the free pitchers of beer on Saturday nights, LOL!

Emerson's was great. I worked there as a dishwasher, busboy and porter (janitor). I was too young to be working there. I had to get a work permit.

Does anyone have a picture of Emerson's? I would like to see one.

It was located about where the car wash and Mexican restaurant next to the Hampton Inn in Fairfax are located today.

Interestingly, Squire Rockwells on Rt. 236 was originally a Steak & Ale.

How about Sir Walter Raleigh Inn just off Gallows Rd, across from Luther Jackson MS.

The Fairfax Steak & Ale, which is now a Moose Lodge or something just off Rt. 123, was the first restaurant management position for Chris Sullivan back in the 70s, the founder of Outback.

Looks like I'm about a year late, but that building that housed Shakey's, Spaghetti Mill, Magill's, etc was originally an ACME Supermarket. I remember when they built it in the late 50's. My mom shopped there.

That folks, is why it sets far back from the road. Grocery stores usually have large parking lots out front, right?

I was trying to find an old steakhouse I loved down here and couldn't find it. Thought I was losing my mind. It was Squire Rockwell's. At least now I know why I couldn't find the building and what happened to it. Sad though. I loved that place! :(

yes, caldwells was down next to manny moe and jack, adjacent to a building that had some goodwill/salvation army donation center, a pet shop in the bottom level, and meekins and associates realtors on the top level. it changed to something else after caldwells for a while, and for a while it had sand pit volleyball courts in front where parking was. was hangout for AHS grads that didnt go to kilroys. some time in the early/mid 2000s the koreans finally got their hands on it and it turned into the gaudy garish monstrosity with korean characters splattered across the front. if memory serves, it's vacant now, all dilapidated and shit.

You are correct Caldwellwas not in the same location as Shakeys. Cal dwells was at 7131 Little River Turnpike, closer to Pep Boys. The volleyball courts came in after it became Main Street USA.

Caldwells was the original site of Shakeys. Shakeys moved to the Old Spaghetti Mills location and then it became Magills.

Ravensworth shopping center had the Alamo that was a cafeteria style steak house. I remember the Alamo had both kinds of draft beer, light and dark!

Sir Walter Raleigh's lives in in Berwyn Heights, MD. It's still 1985 there (except the prices). The restaurant is 30 seconds off the Beltway at the Kennilworth exit.

I used to work for Emerson's back in 72-73 and now back in the area, I'd like to revisit some of their locations. Anything left I would recognize?

Thanks! I knew it wasn't a giant but a grocery store. Lebanese Christians owned the place and they are related by marriage to Paisanos and Lebanese Taverna too.

Well Brian,

I, too, worked there as a dishwasher, busboy and porter (janitor). I was too young to be working there. I had to get a work permit as well.

This was back in 1971, and in 1972 (permit discarded). I was making about $1.50 and hour.

My brother Bill and our neighborhood friend Irv worked there in the kitchen as "Chefs".

Prime Rib, salads and the famous "Grog" drink were the rage. They even add lobster tails later to the menu.

My manager was Mr. Dupree, a Vietnam vet, who once suffered as a younger man from acne and had a pock marked face.

He also liked to hit on the female staff who worked there as waitresses. Not very PC these days.

One night, I once reached down the disposal to remove a utensil, and it turned out to be serrated steak knife that cut me to bone of my left pinky finger.

I was bleeding like a stuck pig.

Mr. Dupree came in and poured Iodine solution on it and placed a Popsicle stick as a splint and then wrapped it with sterile cloth and duck tape.

After that, he told me to get back to work!

Regarding "located about where the car wash and Mexican restaurant", I think that restaurant was the second Anita's New Mexico style place, after the first one being in Vienna VA.

Last thing:

I switched to construction work the following 2 summers, attended George Mason University in 1975 and then did a 36 years stint in the U.S. government, INTEL community.

Retired in September 2011.

Some more triva:

There was a Emerson's Steak House assistant manager who was murdered in D.C. a few years later (1970's). I think his name was Dale.

He was a victim of a hold up by some former Emerson's employees and refused to open a safe, for that, was stabbed or shot.

I think the kid was a blood relative or son in law of food chains owners.

Before that, Shakey's was somewhere else but I don't remember where.
Someplace NE of the current building maybe. Possibly a now demolished building.

Next door to Shakeys was Horn and Horn Buffet with the fattest people in NOVA hogging out on the great fried chicken, I know man I know I was one of em!

Started the decline in the late nineties. I think it was sold to new owners that didn’t care much anymore.

Now that corner is a condo.

Phineas II in Springfield! Great prime rib, chocolate cheesecake and those popovers...bus girl uniforms not so great. Peasant blouse, colorful short panel skirt with ORANGE bloomers!!
Super fun staff and lots of drinking left over wine from the carafes. Hahahaha!!

Don't forget Chesapeake Bay Seafood House in Springfield and Fairfax. They had a very good New York strip steak. It was served alone or with a surf and turf meal. Very tasty.

It was actually called a Delmonica steak. I still miss this restaurant to this day!
