free tuition for qualifying seniors at NVCC

just sharing some info:
If you're 60 years of age or older and have been legally domiciled in Virginia for one year prior to the beginning of the semester in which you enroll, you may qualify to attend credit and many non credit classes at NOVA without paying tuition and fees.

Do we have to pass those classes and do we need to go to nova to sign up? I am 68 year old retired.

Thought you were talking about high school seniors lol. I wouldn't have minded taking summer courses for free and then transferring those credits.

Took two classes at Annandale campus last semester as a dual-enrollment student, but to be honest I'd be miserable going there full-time.

Why are they offering this to seniors? Are they trying to get their enrollment numbers up to justify more funding or bonds?

Books and a parking permit are far from free.

It should be free. The old farts forget everything you tell them and they will be dead before they get the diploma.

Just let everyone have everything for free. Why have any accountability.

While I think it's great that senior citizens are able to get free classes at a junior college, I also think it would be great to offer free or discounted education to the people who it will benefit the most; People younger than 60!

Classes at Nova are $150 per credit hour, which comes out to $450-600 per class. Doesn't matter if it's online or on-campus. Add to that the cost of books, $100-200 regardless if you're renting or buying, new or used, and you're paying $500'ish to $800'ish for one class...at a two year, Junior College.

Really?

I know there are scholoarships and financial aid (minimal help), but I would like to see an entrance exam/aptitude test for each student. If that student shows significant promise in their field of interest they should have the opportunity to take classes at a heavily discounted rate.

Why only for gifted students? Simply put, you can't teach stupid. I'm not going to walk into College classes being a dummy and walk out a MENSA member. The aid needs to go to where it will benefit most.

Education is big business in this country. That shouldn't be the case. I agree that talented teachers need to be paid well and that money needs to come from somewhere, but the fact that kids are going away to school and coming out 10's to 100's of thousands of dollars in debt after 4 years is absolutely insane.

The education system is broken. Don't get me started on healthcare.

^ Seriously? You're complaining about the costs at NVCC? That is dirt cheap.

Here are the rules with respect to seniors:

- You may take a credit course tuition-free on a space available basis if your taxable income for the previous year was $15,000 or less.
- Regardless of income, you may take a credit course for free if you audit, not receiving a grade.
- You may enroll in ELI courses at any time, if there's space available.

So, the majority of seniors are just occupying an available seat in a classroom and are not taking resources that would otherwise be devoted to paying students. Sounds like a win-win to me.

While college costs have increased tremendously, there is the expectation that graduating students will benefit from their education in increased job opportunities and higher salaries over the course of their working life. Seniors just want to learn something new.

NOPE

Students may audit a course and attend without taking examinations. The regular tuition rate is charged.

The quote above - taken directly from the NVCC website - pertains to SENIORS, as I clearly stated. Stay in school, son.
