Which car do you recommend? Current Owners Only Please!

Which to buy? MB ML 350 or BMW X5? The MB interior makes me drool!

Wouldn't I be the talk of Kilroy's on a Wednesday night! LOL!

Neither. Why pay the premium for a Mercedes or BMW if you're getting an SUV?

Sedan no problem, they do those great. SUVs no point. And it still looks like an SUV.

I'd recommend neither if unless you have the money for $1000-$3000 repairs once the blink-and-its-gone warranty runs out for random things. In addition, the ML350's eat through tires and brakes like no other which are a must for safety inspections so you're looking at at least $400 for the tires and another $100 for install (and thats a cheap estimate). If you got the money though, I've owned the MB and would recommend it over the X5, different driving feel on both. That being said, that interior did make me just bust a nut a little.

$71,735 as I spec'd it out. That interior is $4,600 above and
beyond the $1,320 for the leather interior. So it's almost
$6K for the interior plus $800 for a Harmon-Kardon sound system.
MB offers vinyl, although a very good vinyl, as standard.

Today's BMW, Mercedes and other European car brands for that matter are just over-complicated, over-priced machines waiting to empty the wallets of their owners. Euro brands don't have the same quality and dependability as their early-90s glory days anymore. I've owned recent BMWs and Benzes, and almost all of them have electrical gremlins. One faulty sensor can debilitate the entire car, equating to repairs that simply start from a thousand dollars. These repairs are not DIY-friendly (probably by design) and require you to be at the mercy of the stealership. As one poster above said, the M-class SUVs devour brakes. This can be attributed to inadequate brakes that can't properly handle the sheer gross weight of these behemoth trucks (a problem that plagued the first generation of these trucks as well). BMW probably has more electrical glitches than the Benz does. As a close mechanic and Euro car enthusiast friend of mine told me, today's Benzes and BMWs are nothing more than just fancy, glossy plastics packed together. But hey, if you have the money to keep putting into these machines and need to keep up social appearances, then God Bless.

I drive an FX35 and I can attest to this. Way better built than the plastic Mercedes junk and has a bulletproof VQ35 engine. It stands out in parking lots which are usually full of the same German cars.

Its not about the reliability when you talk MB or BMW its all about image. The tow truck driver is right, I have seen some almost new BMWs sitting on the side of the road, hood up. To me they are like boats, great to run around in but a real bitch on upkeep. Nothing cheap on these cars.

Most people in the area who drive BMWs and Benzes live in shitty houses and lease the car for cheap. The car I usually see when driving around the mansions in Oakton or Great Falls are old Japanese cars or minivans.

You probably don't get to see in their garages then. My neighbor consists of jags, porches, BMWs, mercedes, lexuses (lexi?) and a ferrari or two.

the only people driving minivans are the kids. then the black people gave their kid the shittiest car in the neighborhood by far.

Only problem we ever had with our BMW x5 is that a tree branch pierced the window during the Derecho.

Sorry for weird angle, my phone ran out of power that night and i had to snap the picture while charging from my car.

Why do you open a thread asking for "current owners" of BMWs and Mercedes and not expect anyone to talk about their BMW or Mercedes?

I'd stop shaking my head if I were you, apparently you need to preserve every brain cell you can before you go full retard.

One of my wife's coworkers bought a ML. The thing was in the shop for almost the entire first month she owned it. Love that Mercedes quality.

Nice homes have nothing to do with it. I can't wait to get out of my townhouse, but the guy down the street has a new ML63. Makes a lot of sense to buy a $100k SUV when you have a townhouse and a horde of annoying kids.

Driving around a "nice" expensive car around here means nothing. It's all front to soothe their ego, albeit no worse than the "rich" fucker who drives one. Half of the tools driving around in expensive (leased) German cars live in run down townhouse complexes.

Unfortunately for you I actually do live here. I drive a 50k car myself, but I recognize that it's a money pit. Most of the other houses in my neighborhood, which are upwards of $1.3 million, have Toyotas or Hondas parked in the driveway because the owners don't need a ridiculously flashy German car that will suck the cash right out of their wallets.

You're a fucking idiot for basing the worth of a vehicle on it's sticker price.

I drive a Mercedes. I have it because I like Mercedes. Not as a status symbol. I like the car. Just like those who live here and drive Toyotas may like their cars too. Fuck off.

Op, BMW's are shit. So is anything from the VW line up. Do your own research. The Mercedes is nice on the inside, but a Mercedes in SUV form makes no sense to me. There are many more practical SUV's out there that surpass the Mercedes. If you want a Mercedes, buy a sedan, coupe or roadster. If you need something haul your fatass wife and loser vag-rats off to Colonial Beach in, buy a Chevy.

If you want to look rich, drive a Mercedes. If you are rich, buy a BMW. Make sure you get the extended warranty.

BMW is a WAY more fun car to drive. Both have horrific resale values (mostly because all the bells and whistles crap out after 100k miles.)

The BMW rides rough. The suspension is a little too hard. I took a mid-size Lexus out and it's too mushy - like an old Oldsmobile 98 (for those who remember the land yachts of that era). The MB seems just right. And yes, I can afford it. My wife drives a Lexus and while it's nice, the MB beats it.

And no, we're not in an apartment, but have a nice sized house with a quite manageable mortgage.

If you're concerned about fuel economy, I would urge you to look at the ML diesels. If you are willing to go used, look for a CDI instead of a Bluetec. We don't live in California, and the Bluetecs have one more fluid (for the urea injector in the exhaust) that needs to be topped off every 10K miles or the cars won't start.

Own a 2010 X5. It drives like a dream. Wonderful handling. Everything else sucks - the navigation/electronics are incredibly annoying to use. The 'dealer service' light seems to be programmed to go off every 90 days. Every 6 mos or so, you will be told at the dealer that the entire software load needs to re-programmed, after which they'll keep your car for 3 - 4 days. Sterling BMW is like visiting a Chevy dealer - Fairfax BMW is not much better. The service bays open at 7AM - a joke around here. Such much for a 'luxury' service experience.

They include the basic maintenance in the sale, but if you show up even 50 miles before the oil change is due (like you're there for all the other stuff that goes wrong), they won't save you any time by doing it then, they'll make you come back. It eats tires and brakes - and I'm a pretty gentle driver.

Bought another car recently for the wife - a Lexus. Been to the dealer once in a year - for the scheduled oil change.

I found the X5 to ride a little rough. Not bad, just not to my taste. And the nav/electronics did seem needlessly complicated. Our other car is a Lexus and we've been happy with that, plus the Service Department is open at 5:30a until 11:30p 365 days/year. But I haven't needed it much.

Hemmoroids an issue? You have rejected all advice given.

Lexus does take care of their owners on the service end, which you probably won't need, but they do make it easy to get maintenance done. I've heard nothing but bad things about the area's MB and BMW dealers. They seem to act like you should be honored they bothered to show up. I wonder if Audi is that bad too.

Anything Nissan. You cannot go wrong with anything made by this company, for overall reliability. Especially trucks/SUVS.

If you don't like the BMW navigation, the new Lexus systems are awful. The old touch screen was great, but the 2013's have this trackball thing that makes the BMW iDrive system look good in comparison.

Lexus service is beyond comparison. Their styling is getting a bit old, even in the 2013's, which are updates to most models.

I really don't understand why all of these companies think that the little puck control-type systems are the way to go. They're all awkward as hell to use. Yeah, I know, if you dedicate yourself to learning the functions you can click-click-change things without looking. Screw that. Just give me a fucking touch screen like everything else in the world works.

If you are going German, lease the car... then get rid of it in 3 years and lease another one (if you can afford it).

Quality is a hit or miss.... but mostly a miss. Cousin had a 2010 S500 for a while... his was in a shop most of the time, while my friend's (similar car & spec) was fine (mostly).

I would say get something Japanese if you want something that is reliable (there are exceptions...) I would avoid Land Rover as it is more unreliable than the German cars (it is British... you would know what that means if you a car person). I had a neighbor buy a new LR3... there was a rattle in the dash within 2 days of normal driving... Then the electrical shit started to crap out... The suspension started having problems, the ac stopped working, the lights would not work reliably, etc....

With American cars....they are mostly reliable, but the interior start to show wear quickly and it tends to fall apart after a couple years. Mechanically, most are fine.

*This is based on personal experiences and opinions of friends and family (I have multiple family members with repair garages, dealerships, and autobody shops). I am going on past experiences, and the companies might have improved their current lineup...

I have an RDX. I don't know if the MDX is the same but the suspension is stiff as a motherfucker's cock while he's in your mother.

I mean you can feel every pebble you drive over.

Still love the car. Got it because it is highly rated on safety and it's fun to drive.

Just read that the new model got rid of the v4 turbo and put in a v6. and it's fwd instead of awd now. oh well

anyways, most of the people who poopoo on BMWs, mercedes, lexuses, acura, or any sporty luxury car have never driven one and probably haven't been in one. best way to figure out which one is for you is to find one in your price range, what model you like and then test drive it.
(that's if OP is even here still)

Don't be so sure. AC compressor died at 26k, in my wife's 2008 rogue. Waiting to hear back from Nissan on how hard I will get fucked.

A $50 car. Favourites include the Hyundai Pony, Datsun 210, Chevy Chevette and Dodge Omni. You can hold the rusty body panels together with radio station stickers.

Arsehole: "Dude, your car is a beater. Get a better one like mine."
BeaterMan: "How much did yours cost?"
Arsehole: "$30,000."
BeaterMan:"I can buy 600 beaters for what you paid for yours. Dipshit."

We bought a Mercedes ML 350 for my wife 4 years ago. While it looked nice, the car was a piece of shit. It had so many problems, after 2 years Mercedes agreed to buy the POS back and sold my wife another ML 350 (2010) at a deep disvount. That thing had even more problems including multiple electical issues. After 18 months my wife had enough (23 visits to the service dept.) and she traded her vehicle in for a Volvo XC60. She loves that car. No issues at all after nearly 15K miles.

The electrical issues stemmed from the fact that she was cheating on you in the car and getting her vagina juices all over all the shit.

You then got her a volvo and no one was interested in a poor fat old lady, only rich ones. So she no longer can find any cock.

It seems like most cars peaked out with respect to quality in the mid-late 90's with a healthy ratio of mechanical to electronic engineering. Is it more or are most problems i hear about have to do with electronics.

I can honestly say I am NOT impressed with any of the cars out now. They are all clones of each other.

The Honda Civic looks like the Toyota Camry which looks like the Hyundai Sonata which looks like the Kia Optima which looks kinda like the Chevy Malibu which looks kinda like the Ford Fusion which looks like the Mercedes, BMW, and Lexus mentioned above.

This is why I stick to driving older cars, at least they have STYLE. Everything today is cookie-cutter- the only difference being a few pieces of flair and where it was made.

It's all the same shit nowadays. You think a BMW 328i is any better than a fully loaded camry? HAHAHAHAHA That v6 Camry would woop on the 328 0-60 and 1/4 mile and have less problems than that POS BMW. It's all the same shit nowadays so hold onto your money unless you are a fool.

Thank you all for your responses. Before I read the posts I went out and got the G-Class ($80,000 used with ~10,000 miles). I have put on 3000 miles without incident other than a few electrical gremlins (radio was boinking out and for some reason prevented the vehicle from starting, blinkers don't work although I have a MB GET OUTTA MY WAY, crankshaft and camshaft position sensors needed to be replaced, and it needed some tune-ups with the poor mileage I have been getting (6 mpg).

I am verry happy with this car but the upkeep is tremendous! I have spent $4,000 repair scratches on the paint already! They looked like key marks :/

That pic was taken 1 hour before I arrived to pull you from one of those snow banks. Let me know when your Land Rover breaks down from electrical problems or various other known issues with ALL Land rovers. I'll be happy to tow you from the snow banks too.

I test drove the new RX, got about a block from the dealer and turned around and said never mind. The fucking track ball thing would have driven me crazy. I don't need to make Open Table reservations, or google searches, or whatever from the dashboard in my car. Everyone has an iPhone/iPad/Droid - why do we need another connected device to look up the same shit, and one with a crappy UI to boot. Stick an iPad in the dash, and I might be interested.

You "need" it because cars are a lot more similar than different these days so it's one of the few ways that they can still differentiate brands. Not like years ago when there were significant differences in key design features 4 wheel independent suspension, disc brakes, ABS, multiple air bags, stability control, a motor with decent output etc., etc. Now even lower-end cars have all that and build quality is high pretty much across the board. It's more of an incremental game these days. The electronic gizmos and things like warranty and included service now are key selling points (beyond the usual brand marketing BS).
