WASHINGTON - A 4-year-old boy is dead following an accidental, self-inflicted fatal gunshot to the head.

Prince William County Police are investigating the shooting which occurred in a parked truck in front of a house in the 14800 block of Empire Street in Woodbridge.

"The vehicle that the child was in at the time of the shooting is a family member's vehicle," says Officer Jonathan Perok with Prince William County Police.

They believe the boy found the hand gun inside the unlocked truck, which was parked in front of the child's home.

Perok says family members were home at the time but none was in the truck with the boy.

A family member called police around 3:25 p.m. to report the shooting. The child was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Perok says the incident highlights the need for gun safety.

"It's not illegal to have weapons but they need to be secure, especially if they're going to be around children," he says.

David, who declined to give his last name, used to live on Empire Street and his parents and young daughter still do.

"I think it's a tragedy, especially...after hearing about Aurora, Colorado," He says.

David says he thinks there should be more restrictions on guns.

"I don't know what's going on in the minds of people," he adds.

The boy's identity has not been released.

Prince William County Police say the 4-year-old boy shot himself while in a family member's pickup truck. (WTOP/Michelle Basch)

How does one enforce "more fucking responsible"?

By adding restrictions to guns.

I have no problem with gun ownership. I also have no problem with legally requiring gun training for gun owners.

Militias, afterall, are well-trained...

The parents should be in jail. Nobody was watching the child and he was left in a truck.

PWC sucks.

I mean yea. Loaded weapon in parked vehicle, unlocked = bad. What's even worse, is a 4 year old being outside alone. Recipe for disaster. Poor baby. R.I.P. little one. The parents pain will be more than enough. I don't think they should necessarily go to jail.

I don't know why everyone is so upset...gun ownership is simply a matter of post-industrial Darwinism. Eventually all of the irresponsible gun owners and their overly curious children will get shot and die and then the only people left on the planet will be either non-gun owners or safe gun owners.

Agreed. This case in point. Sentencing has already been served -- the death penalty for their child.

The gun owner and the parents should go to jail. A child is a gift. He was four. Why was he left alone in a hot truck. I hope the parents rot in hell.

The proper place for this thread isn't here, it is here in the Prince William area of the site:

http://www.fairfaxunderground.com/forum/list/38.html

How McGruff can be on alert for copy-pasting articles but not understand the concept of Fairfax County stuff being posted in a Fairfax County forum is beyond me, especially when there is an area available for other counties as linked above.

The gun owner should get 5 years and the mother should get 18 months and any other kids she has should be taken from her and sent to a good foster home.

David must be a real retard. His kid lived there with his parents and he doesn't. Sounds like a real loser. Yeah, lets interview the idiot loser and post what his opinion is on guns.

I'm sure this kind of thing has happened in fairfax in the past, Trust the government to protect your kids. This must be why the Government increased gun sales after the VT shooting.

Excellent. That should give anyone dim enough to stash a gun in the glove compartment the opportunity to purchase a trigger lock.

I can't feel sorry for parents who don't care enough to watch their kids. And add to it a unsecured gun, yep, no sympathy for the parents at all, they are at fault here.

This is tragic....so it this, but, these people didn't decide not to watch the kids, this was a tragic accident, or so it seems.

------------------------------------------------------------------

OSAGE BEACH, Mo. — A 13-year-old girl and her 8-year-old brother were electrocuted Wednesday while they were swimming in the Lake of the Ozarks near Osage Beach, Missouri, authorities said.

The two were swimming near a private dock in the lake when they were killed, according to a press release from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

“The children screamed when the initial shock hit and when the adults dove in (to attempt rescue) they could feel the electricity in the water,” said Highway Patrol Sgt. Paul Reinsch.

Then the adults turned off the electricity to the dock” before pulling the siblings out of the water and attempting CPR, Reinsch said.

The children, who were from Ashland, Missouri, about 60 miles north of the scene of the accident, were taken to Lake Regional Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Reinsch told CNN the water was electrified because of “a problem with the wiring going to the dock from the house,” although he stressed that investigators could not pinpoint which of several electrical components on the dock caused the accident.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol Marine Operations Division and the Division of Drug and Crime Control were investigating, and autopsies were planned, authorities said.

Uh huh, sure. It was the Gov't that increased gun prices.

Not that this isn't all kinds of wrong, but the truck actually was locked (although not secured)...the child got in through the sliding back window.
