Crackdown prompts student exodus to other counties

The number of non-English-speaking students transferring from Prince William County schools to neighboring school systems climbed again last month as families flee the crackdown on illegal immigrants.

The vast majority, 623 of about 760 departing students, have moved to neighboring Fairfax County schools, while 80 selected Arlington and 58 chose Alexandria.

State and local school officials are trying to get a handle on the impact of a Prince William County policy directing the police to inform federal immigration authorities when illegal immigrants are questioned for traffic violations and minor crimes. Supervisors are considering a pivotal vote on whether to fund the multimillion-dollar policy Tuesday amid a budget crunch.

The transfers from Prince William County to Fairfax County are nearly triple the 241 students who completed the same transition between September and late March last year, and officials say the immigration policy contributed to the increase.

Critics, including Capital Area Immigrants' Rights Coalition director Kathy Doan, contend the crackdown has driven hundreds of legal immigrants, including the U.S. citizen children of illegal immigrants, out of the county as families seek jurisdictions with less aggressive enforcement tactics.

Virginia School Superintendent Billy Cannaday held a regional conference call with top officials from 13 school divisions earlier this month to get a grasp on the extent of the regional migration.

Cannaday wanted to determine whether the families of immigrants were leaving education altogether, which he said appears not to be happening, or transferring to neighboring districts, which is.

"While [Prince William Schools Superintendent Steven] Walts informed us that ... enrollments had dropped 718 students since Sept. 30, 2007, it appears that most of these students may have enrolled in Fairfax, Arlington or Alexandria public schools," Cannaday wrote in a memo April 4.

School officials now say 759 students left the school system through March 31, up from a preliminary 718.

While the number of students learning English has eroded throughout the school year, it follows a 1,546-student increase last summer. Teachers are still educating 800 more English language learners than last school year.

Supporters of the illegal-immigration policy, including Chairman Corey Stewart, say the drop in school enrollment will save the county $6 million in fiscal 2009 and result in at least 40 fewer teaching positions next school year.

What makes breaking an immigration law any different from say a DUI, drug charge, or a robbery? They broke the law. end of story. no education should be provided

Presenting false identification to a law encorcement officer is a
crime. So is obtaining a drivers license under false pretenses. Driving
without a license or insurance is a crime. So is failing a file a
(truthful) income tax return. (State or Federal) Using a fake Social
Security number is a crime too. (at least the last time I checked)
The list goes on.

Illegal immigration is a crime. It does not matter the venue in which it is tried. Traffic tickets are tried in traffic court, but that does not mean speeding, etc. are not crimes. You can also be sent to jail by a traffic court judge. Furthermore, to refer to something illegal (i.e. illegal immigration) is to refer to a crime.

I've lived around some real white trash in my life. I'd much rather have some "hispanic" neighbors, than stupid redneck filth. White trash folks actually feel they are equals. They actually think they are entitled to equality simply because they are white and grew up speaking english. They are clueless in terms of their place in society.

I'd much rather live next to someone else, regardless of their skin color. They couldn't be any worse.

Apparently "misdemeanor illegal entry" is a federal crime that can not only put you in front of a federal judge, but also get you held in jail for up to 180 days, then deported. Is that not 'crime' enough?

Mexicans Without Borders has announced another mass protest action in the District of Columbia on May 1st in support of amnesty for illegal aliens and a halt to all enforcement of federal immigration laws. Joining Mexicans Without Borders on the traditional day of celebration for the Communist International is the usual coalition of “mainstream” political organizations. Somehow, I doubt that these folks are going to gain much sympathy from Congress, or improve their standing with the American people.

It’s an interesting collection of fringe groups. Here’s the official list:

* Barrios Unidos, ex-gang members that I saw threaten to attack Herndon residents last summer following a town council meeting
* CASA of Maryland, which helps illegal aliens register to vote in Maryland
* Mexicanos Sin Fronteras, the local arm of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation

* the Latino Media Collective, which wants to make D.C. a sanctuary city
* the Metro D.C. Interfaith Sanctuary Network, which seeks to establish “sanctuary cities” across the United States

The best part is that on the bottom of the Mexicans Without Borders web page devoted to this action, is the following: “Viste o porta motivos y banderas color rojo”, which roughly translates as “wear red or bring red flags with you to the march”. How nice it is to see that the open borders/amnesty crowd is so tightly linked with communist radicals, although BVBL readers won’t be too surprised about this.

I have no problem with hispanic neighbors either, as long as their here legally. I have neighbors from Honduras and we get along great, but they're here legally.
I don't care what color skin folks have or where they come from as long as they follow the rules and don't cause trouble.

The immigration issue is not racial for me. It's an economical and protection issue. Everyone in THIS country needs to be properly documented and accounted for, no matter where you're from or what race you are, PERIOD.

Vince, I hate to break this to you, but all of us born in this country were properly documented the day we got our social security number, birth certificate, drivers license and passport.
Those that came to this country legally are also properly documented. Don't you want to know who comes into this country and why? Or do you have the "open door" policy?

you must be crazy to send those people back home. in these hard economic times I get cheaper lawn care, get things around my house fixed for cheaper, and have them do whatever I want for cheaper. Hell I didn't do anything to deserce these high prices so I could care less about paying money to crook companies.

Each time they check a drivers license they're checking your "papers." No one gave my ancestors anything- last ones to come here were grandparents. The first came over on cruddy wooden ships [free trip and nominal charge]. Get my drift?

I guess the blight team is going to be busy and that will cost even more money. With all the FX affordable housing stuff and the fact that the newest apt they bought is interest only , I have an idea. It's based on the small rooms some with shared baths at pod hotels.

I figure FX is going to tax me for housing for them so stick them at the old Lorton Prison site? FX already owns it. Get 2 birds with 1 stone - Many have worked construction - can fix it up in exchange for room - walls , doors, asbestos removal. Their kids can go to the New South County Schools.

ok...so if all us "legals" are properly documented...what's the issue? Those of us improperly documented should be easily identified and appropriate actions taken. Obviously the current procedures are seen as deficient. Perhaps what needs to be done is the goverment needs all hotels...apartments...mortgage companies to feed them information on who is residing there...bounce them against those official records and see who doesnt fit in? Maybe they need to collect credit card records and do the same thing...or ATM transfers! Pretty soon they'll have an excellent picture of where people belong and when they are where they arent supposed to be.

This is an example of why this country - on the Federal level - needs comprehensive immigration reform. We need tighter border enforcement, stricter workplace enforcement and a more realistic path to citizenship for those who want to come here legally. This business of PWC having a different standard than the surrounding counties is bad for PWC (falling property values, slowed economic growth) and for Fairfax (overcrowded schools and housing).
